What is "futurity locked"?
  • I understand that it means a horse can't be sold back to the game, but why does it happen? Does the owner choose it? How, and more importantly, why? I have so many questions. Thanks.
  • Futurity locks prevents a horse from being sold back to the game until they are 6. Since a stallion needs at least 10 foals that are the same era as him to qualify for the boards, locking prevents a stallion from being disqualified if a foal is sold. Unlocked foals still count, locking just prevents accidental sales. The horse's owner is the one that can lock them.

  • And the foals have to be owned by someone other than the stallion owner? Do they have to be bred by someone else too? Whats in it for the foal owners?

  • Foals have to be breed and owned by someone who has never owned the stallion (so you can't just swap stallions with someone.)

When month-end awards go out, the top futurity stallions get GMT prizes, but the owners of the top ten foals of those top stallions also get a GMT prize per foal. There's an element of luck to it, but it can be a big return for cheap breeding of show ponies that will also earn you points.

Sometimes people will offer rebates on straws or stud fees or bounties if foals are futurity locked, because then the owner of the stallion can be confident the stallion will still be qualified in five years when those foals will be higher earning.

  • Okay, thank you, I think I finally get it now. So basically just pick a stallion, offer straws, then once foals are futurity locked then can offer some money back or something. How much is the rebate usually? Just enough to cover costs, or like a semi bribe level haha.

  • @HunterUnderSaddleGirl foals do not have to be futurity locked to qualify a stallion. Locking just prevents the foal from being purchased by the game and deleted.

How much you offer is up to you. Some people offer a substantial amount and some just give out free straws. I've offer 60k per locked foal, for the 1st 10, before. Since I am a member of the Breeding Circle discord I don't really need to do that since we usually manage to get everyone's stallions qualified by the end of the season.
  • I rarely see people offering payouts for breedings anymore and I have not seen it make a big impact on what studs get used or not.

  • There's just so few people that use outside stallions in general I'm not sure what is desired by a lot of people. I always think ppl will like closed genes, but then that just means there's less ppl that can use the stallions

Id love an invite to the discord if there's an opening @Hightstorm. Im "realknight" on discord

  • That has changed a lot since I added the futurities. Mostly people are trading breedings not looking for what is "desirable".

For me my futurity foals are almost entirely separate from my other programs. I don't really focus on genetics, just era for my futurity herd.
  • I completely overhauled my system and changed my goals this year so I can use more outside stock, even though I've always loved other people's studs. I make an effort to use everything I can that gets advertised on the forums and still end up on discord about once a month.

  • Yeah I'm trying to figure out how I want to balance pasture usage, outside stock and AI use to maximize futurity chances. Pasture breeding is so much cheaper and easier but I think it will be fun challenge

  • I do futurity breedings just to get some horses qualified, as that's what people have done for me. But I also use futurity breeding as a way to get different bloodlines for particular eras. So even generations, desirable genetics/colours and quality play a part in who I choose to breed to.
I've had some nice gmt additions at the end of the season, for both top 10 foals and stallions on the futurity LBs, so win win I think from either side
