I do plan on making a brand at some point. Does anyone have any pointers on an easy way to do this?

It'll just be letters so that part should be simple. I'm not particularly tech savvy and I'm always adverse to downloading an app for a single time use.

I typically use the app IbisPaint. I've made several Tattoos/Brands for this game there.
The app lets you choose what size you need, or just use the size they automatically recommend (this game does tell you the size that the tattoos have to be). You can save it multiple ways (you'll wanna be sure you save it as transparent so the "white areas" you don't paint are not left as white spots on the official image on the horse). Otherwise, really the rest is up to you and pretty simple, usually.

Thanks a bunch! I finally figured it out.
For those that come by this post later: I found it was easier to resize the image first then put the letters for the tattoo in. I didn't choose complicated design. Also, the image in the app looks more blurry but it uploads into the game well.
