Low PT horse showing?
-
Hi. I’ve read the guides on earning hbs through showing, thanks for all the helpful tips and to the people who made them!
However, i’m not sure if showing pointed (created) horses with low PT and usually placing last is worth to keep showing every week or not. Will they earn more than their entry fee eventually or will it be more cost effective to just keep them for breeding and/or their daily hb payout?
Thanks! -
If they are low enough PT to be leveled off and are consistently placing last, they are not worth showing and are better off in the pasture. If they are still training, it might be worth giving them a couple of weeks off, then showing them to see if their score has improved enough to place better, depending on what show level they are on (L or R, probably not worth it. N or W, could earn a decent number of points if they get into the top half of the class.)Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses. Liver chestnut, DP mushroom, and rose gray riding horses. Dun cobs with all the patterns. Watercolor, Wrong Warp and ice on mixed body types.

@OndowaStables thanks for the tips! I have a couple thats 4-ish PT and low pointed, so i was wondering if i should still keep them because they are expro, but with their PT that low im not sure if i should even breed them in the first place. I’ll try out your suggestions, thanks a lot!

Shamroc breeding ability and PT score are two separate things. A low PT means a horse is not going to be a great show horse, but can still produce very good foals. If your horse is an Expro then they will produce good foals.
-
@HighstormFarm i hope this make sense, but from what i understood from the expro horses, my math is that 105% of a 5 PT expro horse will produce at best a 6-7 PT foal (assuming if the parent was also 5 PT as well). Which is still not a good horse to keep for showing purposes.
Unless i mistook what the 105% breeding ability does completely, which will be embarrassing. -
@Shamroc As said breeding ability and PT score are not related and a low PT will not mean a horse will produce low PT foals. A good breeding horse is more likely to produce foals with a higher PT, but a high PT is not a reflection of a higher breeding ability than a horse with a lower PT, when comparing similar horses. I am not sure where your math came from.
Here is an Expro mare I have, her PT score is only 6.2, yet her foals are all at least 10.7. Even though her PT score is low she produced foals with higher PTs because she has a good breeding ability.

Oh lol, i thought the 105% breeding ability applies to the PT instead of in general. I think i get it now, thanks a lot!
