How do you decide which horses to spay/geld?
-
So, I know you're supposed to have a lot more geldings and spayed mares than breeding horses. The game seems appropriately ruthless when it comes to foals/yearlings I bred, but it passes more foundies than it fails, and I have a lot of foundies right now because I just started and it took me a few days to figure out how pastures work, so I bought *a lot* of foundies to fill my barns.
So now I'm contemplating whether I should be manually altering a bunch of the foundies passed by the breeding test. But I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. Should I trust the breeding test completely and leave intact anything it passes, or should some of them still be altered? If so, how to decide which ones? -
So foundies are definitely a lot easier to pass, which works out well because you can snip them as ruthlessly as you like! They're easy to come by, easy to replace, and it's very easy to get super picky with what genes you want on them. Some people will only have a certain rank special as their breeding source, and other people look for specific harder to find genes like pearl or DP or belton, or get really specific with "only white spotted blue roans" or etc.
I personally pretty much don't use foundies anymore myself aside from eggs/embryos from decked out GMTd mares, and mares with at least two of four for DP/snowflake/pearl/S+ (which mostly ends up being rank specials). I also keep a pasture of plain ExPros just for the sake of breeding a high papered stud to them to create show foals that are all snipped.ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines!
