How do you cull your show heard?
-
My barns are full and I need to get rid of a lot of ponies so that I have space for future foals, what are your cut off points for culling show ponies?21170

At 10 horses sold through auction will have a starting bid of their lifetime payout. If I need space I will auction off 10 y/o's that are 500-600 overall point or less. I will also weed out horses who have leveled off and aren't placing well.
Now if I have an older horse with like 1k+ pts their daily payout is high enough that I will keep them no matter what. -
Over 13 years old most of my horses are maxed out on training and possible showing position. I'll cull the bottom third points or under 80hbs/day show bonus between 13 and 17 years old. Also anyone 39 years old because they're guaranteed to pass the next season so why not get the auction amt before that happens.

I auction most of my show horses at 10 for their lifetime payout, unless they are exceptionally highly pointed creates or I just like them for whatever reason.
I also go through my barns every month or 2 and auction off my low performers of any age based on points earned and / or winnings earned. 3 year olds are compared to other 3 year olds, 4 year olds to other 4 year olds, etc.

I do a search of ages 10, 14, and 17 by total points and just start picking them off at the end till I have enough room. It's best not to cut 10 year olds if they haven't finished training yet. (PT number)45120

The only time I cull my show herd is 10 years old. Anything with 500+ points get to stay. Everything else goes.
Most of my 13+ pts have at least 500 points by that age anyway.Thanked by 1Summervine
