Horse Organization?
-
How do you guys organize your horses/ stables? I was planning on a stable per project & then show horses, but my brain is too chaotic. I love all of my horses, but I'm too disorganized to keep track of everyone when it comes to barns & names & breeding. I'm pretty stuck and overflow my barns quickly. How do you keep yourself organized in game?
-
I try to give each of my different projects their own barn/pasture. I distinguish different generation by number, like HF2 for second, HF3 for 3rd, and so on.
You can also use tattoos for different groups. I haven't tried this out yet since I haven't gotten around to figuring out how I'd use them or finding someone to make tattoos for me.
You can also do separate breeds for different projects. -
I sort my barns like so:
1 group labelled for stallions (usually only one barn)
1 group labelled for breeding mares
1 group labelled for show ponies
I sort my horses using prefixes and suffixes in the names.
Prefixes tell me generation: BV#
Suffixes tell me the big important genes I'm breeding for (each gene gets a single letter, lower case denote heterozygous, upper case letter denotes homozygous). For example, the name "BV3 Sleeping Demons PDB" tells me the horse is third generation (I breed by generations and paper level) and that he is homozygous for platinum (P), DFP2 (D), and chocolate (B).ID# 25784 -
I sort my breeding barns by line or purpose, so 1 for Futurity hopefuls and public studs, 2 for my Metallics line, 1 for Sierra, 1 for Cloudy Skies, etc.
Then I sort my show barns by age. The largest is for anyone under 10, or those over 10 I am keeping longer. The other 2 are for anyone who is 10 or close to, and will be auctioned for their lifetime pay out.
I'm re-doing my naming system, but moving forward everyone will be named by line and generation: M2, CS2, S2, etc.
I know which genes exist in each line, and they're all separated, so I won't need to add prefixes for genes. I had prefixes for genes before but found it just made me feel chaotic, personally.

My “lines” are very chaotic because I can never keep a bunch of projects separate! So basically I only have two, my fantasy and my “natural” looking line. They both have a whole jumble of things, lol!
As for keeping culling standards strict, I use a maximum number that I have to stay under, as my gene/cull standards tend to vary a bit year to year based on whatever gene I’m wanting more of in my lines. So I just have two pastures for fantasy and one for not, and the pastures are the number limit on breeding mares. Barns are only for 3 year olds and below. Once they hit 4, they either replace another mare in pasture (who is then snipped or sold) or get tossed to the show or sale barn themselves.ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask!Thanked by 1MamaMiaStables -
I have a big barn, but no matter what I try I don't know how to keep separated lines on the same account. So I have 4-5 accounts spread out over all three servers so I can have very a different focus on each one. Seaswell on Forest is all about closed genes on heavy. Seaswell6 on Forest is playing with w1 to see how many foals I can loose a month to white factor and still see growth. Seaswell on bluegrass is the tiniest ponies I can breed. Seaswellingrey on mesa is all about wild bay and grey. And DejaRea joined when mesa opened, it likes heavy dark, but I've always treated it like a place to play when I spend all my money every where else. I wouldn't recommend over 3 accounts if you actually want to remember to show everyone twice a week.45120

My horses are sorted by generations in barns, then in pastures they are sorted into their respective lines. For barns I have small ones for stallions: foundation, 2nd gen, 3rd gen, etc each has their own barn. Then I have "foal barns", one for colts that are sire prospects, 2nd gen fillies, 3rd gen fillies, etc. Then I have show barns for all the retired and altered horses. Pastures I have sorted by line in each generation. So a pasture for cobs, one for light, one for fantasy, one for mushroom. Each generation from 2nd up to 6th or 7th, has a pasture for each line.
Naming horses is pretty simple:
1BL (name) - this means foundation, B/red paper light bone
3SH (Name) - this means 3rd gen, star/gold paper, heavy bone
5SM LTD (Name) - this means 5th gen, star, medium bone and LTD is Fantasy line
I also be using Mu for the mushroom Line. DOA instead of the 1BL etc for my bootstrap line.#28036 -
I have a barn for each line and then horses all include G2, G3, etc in the name. I open the barn in search and search for the generation I'm looking for and select the horses through the search.

I mark by Generations with some prefixes and Groups ids.
2nd and 3rd gen get stud signifiers:
OnyxG2E xxxx is a foal by Leucoryx
OnyxDydG3E xxxx is a 3rd gen foal by the sires Leucoryx and Dusty Dancer
Gen 4 and up get genetics IDs because it gets too hard to list stud signifers.
So a Gen 4 group from my chinchillas with specific sires would look like: chnG4Eb xxxx (Chinchillas) (Even generation 4) (Sire Group b)
I'm taking a page from Seaswell and some other folks though by moving my C-paper foundie Bavarian line to a separate account as well as my unlicensed Futurities line.
I mark Futurities by era so it's easy to pull them out of the breeding list for the correct era stud.
Example: BtSt 4 xxxxxx is a horse to be bred with other Era 4 horses. -
my barns are so disorganized… it makes my head hurt… i try and collect all my babies out of the pasture before they get sold back and end upmjust stuffing babies any where the fit.. it’s a disaster lol.

Mine are a mess too. I name using an abbreviation of my stable name and then a number for the generation, so WD4 would be a fourth gen. I just have barns based on gens, but that quickly got out of hand. Pastures are by lines and generations. I have too many horses and many many show barnsIAM WolfDen #50695

One thing I find really handy is to have enough barns you can keep your primary barn empty. That way you can dump one pasture at a time into primary, sort and name them, then move them to the right barns so you can do the next pasture.45120

Bear in mind that this is advice from a mega-barn, but you might get some additional ideas.
I keep my primary barn empty - as Seaswell mentioned, this is quite helpful if you can afford to do it. I have a single barn for stallions, and when/if it gets full I snip snip snip. I have one barn for colts, one barn for fillies 1yr old, and one barn for mares 2+ years old.
If you can, have enough pastures so that your mares can live there full-time. This gives you full breeding bonus every season, and more room for show horses in your barns. I have a pasture for each generation of each line, named for that group. My horses' names also have prefixes that match. Naming is a critical component of my organization, I can always tell at a glance where any given horse belongs.
Example: My Doubleskunk tribute herd horses' names all have the prefix RBx, where x is the generation: RB1 = foundation, RB2 = 2nd gen, RB3 = 3rd gen, etc. The pastures are named accordingly. RB1 is all foundations, RB2 is all 2nd generation, etc. All show horses have the prefix FF (for Follys Fantasies) and their name is their ID number.
(In case you're wondering where that RB came from, the Doubleskunks were originally the Ray Bostwick Lives tributes, and it was easier to just let them keep their RB prefix.)Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free. -
I will third keeping your primary barn empty! I have some sales ponies in there now, and some mares I need to finish sorting. Nobody lives in there permanently, and it is empty most of the time. :) It makes it waaay easier to sort when you're feeling disorganized.

I'm just coming back after a very long break. I was a mega barn, but am not even close now. The nice thing is, I was able to restart organizing everything.
It's still a work in progress, but I also try and keep my primary barn clear, and I've also started holding mares in a pasture that will be cycling into rotation next season.
I keep a foundation stud barn, and generation barns for my C/Y lines and R/B lines. They are labeled as 2Gcy, 2Grb, if I remember to name them correctly. (Brain fog sucks! Lol)
I'm still finding my lines, so I cannot sort for a specific line as of yet. Everything is being tested for color, genes, white factor, etc. to see what it is I want to go after this time. Once I do, I will sort by line, and change names on tattoos I already have to help keep track of all the horses. Each line will have a tattoo.
