I have a question about breeding.
-
I have never mixed c/red before (a C stud and an exceptional producing mare). I just oopsed one, and I'm kinda in love. Is this still considered even breeding?

The gorgeous little man I got. His genes blow my mind.
What would you do in this situation? I may make a separate pasture for a line starting this way. I never expected to get an A level from a C stud. -
Even breeding is supposed to mean even breeding ability. Many people confuse it and think it means even pedigree length. Some might call this even, but it is not when it comes to strict breeding advice.
That said, even breeding is no longer as important because there is no longer any penalty for breeding unevenly with regular breeding advice.Need to contact me? Read this first. I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

So this guy shouldn't have passed SBA? (He did.)
Thank you, Ammit! -
The more uneven you get the less likely a horse is to pass SBA. You have never had to be perfectly even to get passing foals. Breeding like this you will get less intact foals than you would if you breed evenly. Some people consider that to be a problem. Some people consider than an asset. :)Need to contact me? Thank you so much. I may play around with it a little. I just love his genes. Maybe it will be a new boot-line for me.
I've never gone for the leaderboards. I don't think I ever will. I mostly just breed for stress relief and all the very fun genes. Maybe keeping just the BIP or A and blue babies from this could be fun. :) -
Sometimes the genes end up taking precedence over the quality or previous self imposed requirements, and that’s fine, the most important thing is to have fun playing!
Here’s a fun example from my own herd: this was a **star to a red cross! Uneven as heck, lol. But she’s *gold, so while she’s not necessarily the best of the best, I consider that a decent enough improvement to keep her around for the gene I want (ice 4, which I don’t have a ton of in my herd and I’m trying to get more. It’s so pretty!)

And she gave me the cutest i4 filly this year!

They're both beautiful! I love ice 4. It's definitely one of my favorites.

I've never done even ability breeding particularly, but I do even generation breeding, which does mean usually the abilities are fairly similar, especially if you keep doing BA/SBA through the generations.
I often breed reds/C and B/yellow foundations. They are all foundation so it's even breeding for me! The best thing is that as long as I use BA/SBA it increases the quality of the lower quality parent -
Thank you. This has all been very useful information. (I was gone for over a year, so I'm relearning everything and rebuilding.) This definitely gives me food for thought. :)
