I was very excited to receive some lovely straws from NorthernStars' Optimum Wicked, as I felt he'd be a lovely cross for a foundation mare of mine who is in danger of aging out. Both are linked below:

The foal carried an excessive burden of white mutations, causing it not to survive.

The mare in question has W20 and minimal white factor, which I know is generally "safe." What happened in this case?

So if I'm remembering correctly, it is solely because of the stud and due to a different white, the Splash types that he has.

SWM, Macchiato, is safe with everything, so we can rule that fun gene out! However this horse has something akin to the Freaky Friday horses going on. You can gmt on lethal combos, and Splash 2 is lethal with Splash 3. There is a 25% chance (50% x 50%, or 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25) that this stud will get a foal with both splash 2 and splash 3, resulting in a lethal combo, and a dead foal. I don't see anything written in his notes about this, if you reach out to the studs owner, maybe they'll give you a new straw?

I think the greater worry they’re running into is that their mare is possibly aging out.

I happen to have a mare nearly identical minus the grey and grey reduction, though, with 9 eggs saved from her. If you wanted, I could see if they’ll sell me straws so I can try a few times for an intact foal, and then sell you the best of the bunch? Here’s my gal.

I did notice that! I had a look through my herd to try and find similar, but I don't even own the base RS with no modifications...

Thanks, friends! I didn't even realize the different splash genes interacted that way. While definitely disappointed, I was also sincerely interested in what happened.

@Lallyhop, that's very kind of you. I would love to try to get a foal or two from your mare. I have a few more straws I could send over to you.

My mare did survive rollover. I tried again but ended up with another lethal white foal :(

Oh, that sucks! Thankfully, all is not lost! Of the three straws you sent, I lost two to lethal white but we got lucky with one :)
