Building a show herd
-
Hi all, it's been a long time since I've last played HAJ!
I'm rebuilding my herd from scratch and have some questions: what makes a good worthwhile show horse or a bad show horse? I'm trying to raise my daily hb bonus. How do you decide which ones are worth keeping around and which are not good investments in the show herd? -
I started building up my show herd with Exception Show Horse Creates. I also bought a lot of higher level PT horses, and horses with 500+ points. I also began a Bootstrap line to produce my own show horses. I tended to look for horses to buy whose PT was at least 10pt so by the time they leveled off I could sell in the auction for their lifetime payout.

It can be difficult to know which horses will be a good shower, since we don't know until they level off.
One thing you can do, if you don't mind "gambling" a little bit, is to look at the auction periodically at the 17 year old horses and older. Their lifetime payout will usually be equal to or less than the base auction price (2500hbs), especially nearer to the end of the month. If you only select those who have a decent amount of points to bid on, if they survive rollover then you've got a big boost to your payout. Some horses can survive many rolloversProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

When I was starting out, I bred a random pasture of foundations who passed breeding advice and kept every foal. The ones who failed BA were put in the show barn and the ones who passed were put in a breeding barn but still shown twice a week. I think all of them ended up with 500+ points before they were 10, even without the bonus to show ability that comes from being snipped.
So my advice would be to breed a bunch of second gen horses and show all of them each month. Also look in the auction and grab any that are fairly high pointed already. I'll sometimes set the auction search to only snipped horses and go down the list bidding on any shiny pony or high pointed one that catches my eye. I've gotten some really excellent show babies that way. If you find ones that are star or gold papered, their PT score tends to be in the low teens, so they'll max out high up where the points earned per show are pretty high even if they don't "win" or place well.Thanked by 1JoieDeVivreFarms -
Ok, so it seems I'm on the right track then buying pointed horses and using exceptional shower creates. To clarify; if I auction a horse after age 10, I get their lifetime payout? (if someone doesn't bid on them)?Thanked by 1Ellesmere022

You get their lifetime payout or the base 2500hbs, depending on which is higher. Some horses at 10 years of age may not have many points (like those kept in pasture).Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
