I got a job interview! Advice?
-
Hello! I’ve been in and out of “work” and college for the past couple years. I’ve been a working student (unpaid) at a show barn for most of it, some pet sitting, some grooming for friends dogs and other odd jobs here and there. I went to college in August after a 2+ year break after graduating highschool. Unfortunately I was only able to make it through one semester (for now) before I had to take a break again due to financial issues and, if I’m being honest, I wasn’t all in the game yet (academically wise, I did terrible…). I ended up taking a break from the barn as well on top of starting school and, again, due to financial issues, having one truck that burn through gas and another being out of commission for a while I couldn’t afford to drive back and forth 5 days a week again. But I’ve been looking around for some work I could do in the mean time and applied to a few places. I ended up hearing back from a dog groomer and scheduled and interview for next Tuesday! I have only really been to one interview and that was four years ago so I’m not really sure what to do or expect. Any advice, tips, or anything really? Thank you!EasternShowBarn

Wear nice clothes but take a change of clothes (neat but older jeans/shirt, scrubs, sneakers, etc) with you. Then if they're going to take you back into the grooming area you can offer to quickly change into your other clothes to help out.
Research the grooming company (website, etc) and then casually mention a few things you found interesting. Like if they have a discount for baby puppy grooms to help the puppies get used to it, if they have pricing that adjusts by size vs coat type, that kind of thing.
If you have any experience with special grooming, like animals with long nails, or geriatric pets, brachycephalic, etc., those would be good to mention as well.
(These are all assuming you're going to be working back in the grooming area, rather than scheduling appointments or helping with reception tasks. I work at a vet clinic and some of my suggestions were modified from my interview to be a vet tech.)
Above all, good luck! ♡ -
Be enthusiastic! Especially when it comes to working with animals, people want to see that you’re into the work and want to be a part of it. Grooming is tough, so showing you’re passionate about it will do you good. Best of luck!Continuing my reign as the most annoying player on the forums and hgg’s favorite butch lesbian cowboy
