How do you decide which ones to max out?
  • I’m wanting to give my young lines a good jumpstart by maxing out three mares from the 2nd generations of each of my lines. I will then flush the maxed 2Gs to produce my third generation and repeat with them…

How do you decide who to max? If you flush a mare and create all of her embryos with the same stallion, will they all max out the same?
  • Yes. They would all turn out the same (except for consistency). So three maxed-out sisters, would all end up with identical abilities. 3 foals from perfect foundation parents will all max out the same.

  • Basically whichever one is my favorite. There’s really no rhyme or reason to it when I choose to max because all of the foals will be the same if I also add consistency to them. I literally just scan their pictures and pick my favorite. Then I max + make consistent.

Sometimes I’ll go crazy and max 10 or so horses so I have a start to a maxed pasture. But it’s so unnecessary and just a way for me to blow through gmt tokens ^_^

usually if I am worried about a particular line I max/consistent a mare/stallion from each generation and then flush and breed together. I’ll max a mare/stallion out of those foals and so on. But again it’s probably unnecessary and more so I have the gmts so why not.
  • So it would be wiser to leave the naturally high ones alone and max the lowest ones if we don’t have a huge GMT budget? For example, if a foundation pair can produce a max of A/Blue 11pt, then I should leave the 10.8 foal alone and max the 10.2 red foal?
  • The problem here is you’re looking at pt which has nothing to do with the breeding ability for that particular horse. The pt on a foal is a representative of its parents breeding ability. But not its own. If you max a foal the pt will remain the same, unless you spend an extra gmt to make it consistent.

When you max a horse you bring its paper level and it’s showing ability to the max both parents can produce. We can’t test showing ability in horses. However, if you max one of the foals, you can test the paper ability of all the rest of that same breeding pair.

So if you max a filly…you can then test every filly out of the same breeding pair against its paper level. That way you can be 100% sure the quality you are looking for is there. If they test aga your maxed filly they are keepers. If they don’t you can sell/spay or max them. Whatever you can afford.

Papering is the most important thing when choosing good breeding stock. A higher pt but lower breeding ability will produce a lower quality/pt foal than a slightly lower pt but better paper score.

Does this make sense? Sometimes I ramble off what I think I know and it isn’t clear. ^_^
  • Maxing also impacts PT. It is just not the only thing that impacts PT.
