Would you Stud, MOA, Geld, or GMT to Mare?
-
I have my first colt that passed SBA since starting with my new stud. He does have genes I would like to continue, but he tested AGA, and only has a pt of 13, where his sire has a score of 14.3.
I can continue using his dam who carries kitm, and I have lots of fillies with sb2 to continue on with both those genes. Since he passed SBA I’m not sure on how to most effectively use him.
The colt in question:
MOA PASSED 10320465

PT is not an indication of breeding quality. I would probably hang onto him for a few seasons and see what else the mare threw. You can also comparison test him against future colts and sell or add him to your show herd if he tests below or AGA one you like better.

@HighstormFarm, I know it’s not on breeding quality, I realize I forgot to add some info to the original post- my goal for my current show breedings is to get SBA passing stock with high pt scores. I’ve been stuck around 13 pt for such a long time, and my current fillies are starting to get to the higher pt scores, but I only SBA test the colts. So with him passing SBA, but falling short in pt score, I’m unsure if this is progress or not.
I think I might take your suggestion though on keeping him around and compare to what else may come along in future seasons as well! -
I believe he could still produce foals with a better PT than he has, likely comparable to his sire since he is AGA him. If you wanted to spend the GMT's you could probably get him superior to his sire by doing max ability and a boost. If you aren't in love with him though I wouldn't bother.
I have a few colts I am sitting on to see what else their sire's produce. I figure I can geld and pop them in my show herd if I get something better in a couple seasons or keep them intact if I don't and replace them later. -
@HighstormFarm I love that strategy! Thank you so much :)
I’ll definitely take that route I think, I’m not super in love with him just because I’d like for him to be a draft and get that agouti gene as well to add a little more color variation. I appreciate the thoughts and ideas :)Thanked by 1HighstormFarm -
Glad to help :) If you have the money you could probably GMT the agouti and draft if his sire or dam have the right genes.

@HighstormFarm I’m trying to save my hbs to get a horse 5% boosted at the moment, so I’m hoping a future foal will inherit both, but I might just put him on hold and add it on in a few months!
