Dapples?
  • Is there a specific combination of genes that produces dapples? I couldn’t find any other posts about this
  • Sooty with DP can cause dappling. S+ does, too.
  • It's not something you can specifically breed for, but on those sooty, S+, and DP horses you can always reroll until you get the image you want.
Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.
  • So, this is a copy/paste because I feel like I might be too tired to be fully coherent, but I LOVE Dapples and have posted a lot about this, so finding it in my comments section was easy enough~

Sooty (sty), S+, and silver (Z) all cause dapples on horses. The dapples from S+ are a little bit different to Sty and Z, but they are more consistent. If you have a horse with sooty or silver and they don't have dapples, you can just generate a new image seed until you get dapples.

Just because the vast majority of my herd are sooty and S+, and I'm actively trying to keep silver and introduce champagne (forgot they had unique dapples too!), doesn't mean I know everything there is to know about dapples...I HAD forgotten the champagne thing after all~! But yes, if you have a horse with these mentioned genes, generate a new image seed for 100hbs to try and get dapples on them if they don't have any. It is luck of the draw, so dapples could pop up in the first one or the tenth one. I just consider them happy accidents, and if I want to make sure dapples are near-certain I select for S+

These are examples of dapples on Sooty horses, no S+

  • I don't think it's that dun and roan mask the dapples, but I think it's more of the fact that dapples are harder to see on lighter coats.

This one has S+ only, but it's difficult to see against the light coat

If you squint through the extensive roaning, you can see the S+ dapples

This one, however, is a roan dun with silver, sooty, and S+

Rabicano, the white striping on the belly, can also make dappling hard to see

This silver bay chinchilla dun, I'm pretty sure, has dapples! If you just squint onto the top of the booty, you can kind of see it.....

The darker a horses coat is, like these beauties, the more those dapples pop :)

And hopefully you didn't mind me spamming my dapples xD I basically have dapple causing genes in all my lines, even the extensively white ones where you may not get a chance to see them 95% of the time.

  • So, TL:DR, sooty, silver, champagne, and S+ cause dapples~! Champagne and S+ cause slightly different dapples. If you have a horse with these genes, you can generate a new image seed for 100hbs until you have visible dapples.
