Breeding and Sale Questions For a Newbie(ish)
-
Hey all!
I've been playing for several months now and have mostly just kept to myself playing with breeding colors and learning the genetics. I've been bootstrapping pastures like crazy every month just seeing what I get and cycling in the best of the bunch, occasionally breeding to outside stock for genes or quality. I feel like I've learned a lot myself just from that, but now I've reached a level of nuance that I could use some advice! (Advice sooner probably would of been wise, but I can be a bit shy on this sort of thing)
First off - Should I be doing comparison testing on all my offspring I plan to breed and do I do it to their parents only or all my main stallions (for colts) etc?
I'm doing well on slowly getting better quality breeders (star/gold), so have started to work on PT but don't think I'm at the point quite yet of being able to spring for boosts (which I don't entirely understand yet either). What other metrics should I be looking for to produce the best offspring?
Lastly, I'm now drowning in horses and am wondering the best way to sell them. Historically I just offload most into the auction house- but should I be listing them for sale or creating forum listings instead? At this point most I am selling are still in the red/blue range but do have some desirable genes.
Thanks in advance for your advice <3 -
So the first two questions kind of tie in together. Comparison testing can get very expensive. Quite often what people will do first when they start comparison testing is to create a "Stud benchmark". This is the best stud that you have at the time. You can get three results with comparison testing:
Better Than
About as good as
Worse than
Basically, you find out what the best quality stud you have is. If you have a lot of studs, this can be difficult, as two horses that test "About as good as" each other, only one could test "Better than" a third horse. Some people do sell Benchmark studs too.
This usually comes after doing all the testing that you use to cull, like BA/SBA, colour, consistency, etc. Rinse and repeat for mares, but often one has a LOT more mares to go through and thus they are more expensive to do.
Which does bring me onto PT and consistency. A consistent horse can have higher PT than if it was inconsistent. While consistency is slightly random, inconsistent horses are more likely to produce inconsistent foals and so culling them from the breeding programme can help boost the PT just a touch.
Once you get high enough Star/Gold horses, it is a slow crawl to the top. You're actually doing very well!
For selling horses, this games market can vary wildly between day to day, or rather timezone to timezone. Different people can breed for different things, so sometimes your foals won't sell at all and then yes, auction is the best option.
Quite often what I do when I sort the horses is I'll put the culls into a barn. You can search by barn ID, which is very handy for culling/selling! There is also a handy dandy button in the barn page, that says "View all horses in search". Once I have them more or less sorted, I'll make a forum post advertising them. I make sure to note what restricted genes, if any, could be in there as well as what "fun" genes there are. I tend to price the fillies at 5-8k, and the colts at 3k. After a week or two, I'll chuck them all into the auction, once again making a post on the advertisement page I had already created that I'm putting them all into auction. Quite often I'll sell a handful of fillies, maybe 2-3 colts. In the auction another handful of fillies usually gets sold as well, but the vast majority will be bought by the game.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable.
On the look out for pointed creates -
Thank you so much! That's really helpful <3 I wasn't sure where to start with selling and as far as the breeding advice this is a great explanation of what how I can break down my next steps. :\">

No problem, hopefully all goes well! If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
One thing I did neglect to mention is if you want to sell some of your foundations, and they have points. Pointed creates tend to go for, at least, half of their life time payout. You can also search the average sale price of a RS by going to Member Home -> Account and Stable Management -> My Herd Helper Collection. It will list all of the HHs, with that page only showing Rank Specials. It says how many are in game, how many you own, their effects, and then the average sale price. Always good to double check before selling any RS.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

I've noticed some rank specials fetch a pretty penny - is there a particular reason why they go for so much? I know a lot of them are pretty cool, but they're almost always red or below etc. So was wondering what the appeal was?

For Foundation horses, which would be any horse you can create through the create a horse page, they can only paper
Failed/Showable Only
Yellow/C
Red/B
So a Red/B foundation horse is the highest you can get without looking into boosting.
For why certain RS go for a huge amount of price, it is several factors I think. One would be rarity. Some RS are only released at certain times, like Friday the 13th we'll get a RS called "Freaky Friday" If the RS is new, then there is basically 1 horse of that RS per person created, and not everyone will create it.
Another would be certain genes. Some of the genes you cannot find on a random create, you either have to gmt or pay real money to put it on. For example the gene Satin. It makes a horses coat shiny, like satin fabric. You cannot find this on a random create, but you can gmt it on. You need 2 copies for it to show (recessive), and it is 20 gmts per copy. So if you want a foundation with hom satin, starting with a RS that has a single copy of it can save you 250k hbs for already having that single copy.
While people tend to like different genes, different combinations, one thing that I feel is slightly site-wide is a love for DP. For example the New Coke RS is hom DP, as well as the Cherry Drop. I think both are red papered as well.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Interesting, thank you!! Do people prefer to have these genes on foundation / RS horses versus bred stock/ offspring or lined horses?
Im so sorry, I feel like Im interrogating you now! xD It's just so interesting and since Ive been too shy to participate much in the forums up to this point- there's a lot I still dont know. -
Foundations are often the start of new breeding lines, especially for those that breed even generations. So a new foundation stallion or mare might be bought to put all the new seasons genes on. New genes can only put on foundations, as lined horses can only get whatever their parents have. I'm one that always picks up foundations of the new era with DP when I find themThanked by 1VenomVixen

Don't worry about the questions, I think I'll only start to worry when you bring over a lamp to shine in my eyes lol
As Kintara says. Most Foundations are what kickstarts peoples lines. The stallions are the ones that usually have all of the goodies put onto them, and are quite often the most "shiny", or loaded with special genes. For mares, because you need so many of them, it's less likely to get one that is perfect for your lines, and so quite often you just get some that kind of fit, and cull the foals until you eventually get what you want.
For example, if you want to start a personal line of satin horses, but can only afford to put hom satin on the stud, it will take you until 3rd generation to get hom satin foals.
Also up until recently putting a gene on a foundation was the only way to acquire the license for it. But now you can buy the license itself!Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Haha don't worry, no bright lights or polygraphs here xD
Thank you guys so much, that makes a lot of sense. So if Im making new creates (whether to use myself or sell etc) is it actually more useful to create colts?
Phew, there is so much more nuance to this than I even began to glean, LOL! I haven't even gotten started on understanding what eras are all about. Most of my stock are Era 0 and Era 4 since that's what my two best stallions were when I started widdling things down a little more. -
Actually, it's usually better to create fillies! Or mares. Stallions can breed 50 times a season/month, but mares can only breed once in that time period (excluding eggs, which are expensive). It's also only 1gmt to change a horses gender in the gmt lab, so if you can't find a good enough stallion you can always find a good enough mare and change her gender (so long as she has no foals alive).
Eras are more of a leader board thing. They don't influence anything other than that, but you can get some snazzy gifts from the Leaderboard! Era 0 was the very first Era, and most older bootstrap lines have this in them. The newest Era is posted at the top. We are in Era 12 at the moment, so all Yellow/C papered foundations created will be Era 12. Any Red/B papered foundations will be 1 Era lower, so they'd be Era 11. If you boost a horse, they drop down an Era too. So if you boost a B Foundation Stallion to an A, he will become Era 10. Horses inherit the lowest Era of their parents, so if you breed a horse with an Era of 4 to a horse with an Era of 0, the foals will have Era 0.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
