Who to Cull
  • Hi everyone, I’m starting to run out of barn space and still have a low daily bonus so I can’t really afford more space just yet.
All but one horse is under 10, and the ones that haven’t earned any points are 2 year old exceptional show horses, so I’m not sure what standard I should have this early.
Or would it be better to just let it be a waiting game and just continue to train and show what I do have to build up the daily bonus?
  • From a quick glance, it looks like you have been investing a lot in fancy genes and not much into barn space. The first step would be to really focus your efforts on getting way more show horses. I would aim for 1000. Fill the stall space you do have with show horses instead of just breeders. Then work on buying more small barns to fill with show horses.

  • @Ammit I’ve definitely been investing big hbs that I get from real money into my flashy horses, I’ll start focusing on using them to get more space and show ponies! Would it be better to just get as many as possible, or take my time to find pointed and best showing ones?
  • I would focus on numbers personally but others might have some good ideas on how to do it the other way.

  • A cheap way to get high pointed horses is to keep an eye on the auction. You can search for horses in the auction by their total points. Any horse above 10 years old will have their auction price set at their lifetime payout.

However a neat thing about this is that if the horse is old enough to pass at the next rollover (18+), then the lifetime payout is just for that month. So if the horse manages to survive rollover, they have an entire month of giving you more money. It is a gamble, but it can pay off.

The auction has just ended I think?

  • @ObsidianKitsune I’ve been playing the auction most the time it’s running, but it’s always hit or miss if I actually come out with anything (everyone’s so speedy! Lol) so most the time I am able to get maybe 1 or 2 1k pointed horses, but I’m thinking of opening up my horizons and going for even 400 pointed ones and see if my luck changes.

I didn’t even think about going for older ones, but I’ll start doing that more too :) thank you so much for the advice!
  • I would say you could probably find, at some points, enough horses at 500+ depending on if anyone is purging barns. If you are looking at older horses with smaller amounts of points, take a look at their PT and their record tab, especially if they are a mare. Mares quite often get chucked into a pasture and left there, so they can't show and earn points. But they will be trained, so when they're pulled out of the pasture if they have leveled off in a nice spot they will quite often rapidly gain points and make spending the min auction amount on them worth. Say a horse who only has a handful of points up for auction at base price 2500. 10+ but not enough points to push them over the 2500hbs range. They've leveled off in position 4/12 in the shows they have been entered into recently (shows have a date). They will earn a decent amount of points if shown often, and don't have to slowly gain through the show ranks.

The best way I have found to look for such horses would be "Points/Earnings this year". You could also try by PT, and restrict your search by age. PT roughly correlates to when a horse will level off in training, so a PT of 9.9 should have the vast majority of 10 year olds leveled off. Horses do gain a small amount of score from training after leveling, but it is minimal.

The foundation rescue is also another good place to check out. Owner ID 13. This is a search by All Time Points, not age restricted, but all horses are the same price and sometimes you can find decent pointed horses in there.

  • Thank you so much Obsidian, I’ll definitely start looking Goff the foundation rescue as well :) I always used to buy horses intended to show only and snip them, but is it worth snipping the senior horses? I know it gives a training boost, but I’m not sure how much it would help if they’re already leveled off
  • It won't hurt to snip them and can keep your breeding program less confusing.

  • As Ammit says. I also use the horse search to sort my breeding herds, so having random mares pop up that are really show horses can be confusing.
