Trying to thin Breeding herd
-
Hi I need help, I've got wayy too many horses in my breeding herd. I'm unsure where to draw the line to snip or where to start comp testing. My daily payout is very comfortable so I'm not concerned about cost or barn space. I've got three new studs at G1 that I'm using and thought about not having inbreeding but may go back to it based on it being easier.ID 52206

If you want help with culling the mares, you can always look at AFPT, or Average Foal PT. The higher the foals PT, the more likely the mares are higher quality. Usually you need at least 3 to get a good average, but the more the merrier.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

So look at afpt , cull the low ones and then comp test from there? - I appreciate the advice
Sorry about half my post didn't upload. I know to SBA, and most eveything is sup to parent. I've got gen 4 and 5 culled. I've just got a monster amount of horses to go through and I'm intimidated lol.ID 52206

The good news is if you're a premium member, you get the AFPT calculated for you! At the very bottom of the family tab, just below the link for the foals. I will usually do 1 herd at a time, or sometimes 1 age group, or sometimes combine the two. For example if I wanna cull my foundations, I'll usually look at the older-ish ones first in the search engine. If you put your own ID in the owner ID it can make sorting out your horses a lot easier.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

I also completely forgot, but you can also sort the horses in the search function by AFPT, under the advanced section. This'll list the horses with the highest AFPT at the top with the order descending.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
