Gmt straws question
-
Silly question:
Say you have an unbred stallion, you collect straws but don’t use them yet.
Is he still GMT-able?
Can you swap the gender to female?
Can you still use the straws?
Can you use a straw on the horse it came from? -
I don't see why you couldn't
-
A horse can still be GMT'ed if you have straws pulled but I don't think you can't swap gender. The AI lab looks at the genes (and gender) of the horse at the time the straw or egg is used, not what it was when the straw was pulled. If you could swap gender with straws pulled they would become eggs. Since eggs are more expensive to pull and can only be pulled in limited numbers while you can pull hundreds of straws at a time, switching gender after pulling straws would be cheating the system.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses. Liver chestnut, DP mushroom, and rose gray riding horses. Dun cobs with all the patterns. Watercolor, Wrong Warp and ice on mixed body types.

So does that mean that if you buy a straw from someone and then later they geld the stallion, you can’t use its straws?
-
No, you can use the straws after they're gelded. I've done it a few times.
