Can anyone explain Varnish Promoter and Lp Promoter to me, please?

I know that with the other 'promoter' type genes they increase how the color/pattern shows on your horse. I'm not sure if there are other requirements like +/+ etc. (I haven't really gotten into the appy patterns, because they can get pretty complicated and my poor brain just gets lost!)
