Inheritance of Evergreen Boughs
  • I’m curious how the Evergreen Boughs non-fading special works.

Is it tied to the PATN1 gene, or the LP gene, or is it a secret hidden thing?

Is there any way to reliably check whether their offspring have inherited the ability, other than to wait until they’re old?
  • If you gene edit an Evergreen to have two copies of LP, does that ruin the effect, or make it more likely to be passed down?
  • You can just look at any appaloosa and see how fast it is varnishing. It is pretty obvious once you start looking.
Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

  • Does the Varnish Regulator 2 H gene override Evergreen?

I’m new, I haven’t had a chance to see any horses get past 5 years old yet.

    Thanks!
  • The search function is super handy. :)

Over on bluegrass, I bred for slow-varnishing appies, so evergreen was a godsend to me. The varnish rate is separate from both LP and PATN. It is a hidden, untestable gene.

Halo (Varnish Regulator 2) is a varnish gene, but I think it's on a separate genome than "regular" varnish. I am less certain about that, though.

A second copy of LP will not overwrite the slow-varnish (this girl also has roan, but it's easy to see that she does not have a lot of LP varnishing going on, despite her advanced age.):

See also this lady (not mine, so I can't guarantee her picture is updated, but she looks consistent with over mid-teenage evergreens I've had).

Versus Non-evergreen apps (which will still include some slow varnishers, just by random genetics):

  • @FeldingFields I think I want to get into breeding slow-varnish appaloosas. Any tips?

    Also, two questions:

1.) does the appearance of the “applying poly varnish” message during image creation have anything to do with whether the horse is a slow varnisher?

2.) does Holly and Ivy also increase your chances of being a slow varnisher? or am I just reading too much into the flavor text?

    Thanks very much!
  • Mostly patience, and committing to have a willingness to walk away from mares (or stallions) that turn out to not be slow varnishers, even if you otherwise think they are very cute. Only of my early 2g stallions with at least one evergreen parent did not inherit the slow varnish... which I didn't realize until he'd already sired several crops of foals. If you can, waiting until a horse is 5 or 7 before breeding them will give you an idea if they are going to be super fast varnishers.

    1) Unfortunately, I have no idea. I'm pretty sure "Drums of Dun" only applies when dun is present, but some like "Hanging Final Frame" and "Calculating Eye Color" show up even where there don't appear to be genes that would impact them. Plus, we have no idea what phrases are triggered but are flipped through faster than the computer can load. I suspect that "Applying Poly Varnish" happens on all horses with LP, but I genuinely don't know.

    2) I think you're reading too much into it. I would not put it past Ammit to be sneaky like that (that's a compliment, Ammit!). I do note that usually when a herd helper triggers another, that herd helper is included in the Herd Helper descriptions with a tag "This herd helper triggers the following primary herd helpers:" but Holly and Ivy doesn't have any of that. I haven't breed enough with Holly and Ivies on my bluegrass account to have a suspicion either way.

If you would like to start your appy herd, I accidentally bought this lady thinking I was on my Bluegrass account. I have no use for her over here, so I'd pass her to you for create price if you'd like her.

  • @FeldingFields I would absolutely love to take her! She’s even a bay which is what I’m going for!

I don’t have my own chat. Can you add me? My id is 55209.

Is there anything I can give you in trade? It looks like you’re mostly breeding for genes that I don’t have the license to… I could keep an eye out on your behalf if you’re gunning for a particular Rank Special.

Side note, I love that your icon is Haley from Order of the Stick.

I've added you to my chat and put her up for you.
