What does this gene do?
-
Dear experienced players,
What does the varnish regulator H gene do?
Also, what is the difference between A and A*?
Many thanks! -
A* is the old "brown" allele. Now brown works like liver chestnut and depends on the number of darkening genes, but it used to be a separate "t" allele in game. Any horse that was already created and tested when the brown change went into effect got that A* in place of the previous t.
The H varnish regulator makes the appy spots roan out around the outside at different rates. Similar to this horse:

See how the spots have a halo around them? Is called "peacock" or "halo varnish" (hence the H as the gene marker). In game is not quite as dramatic as this horse, but some of that is because the image size doesn't allow for super intricate markings yet.
Fun fact: the more darkening genes a horse has, the more likely they are in game to have larger spots. So the halo gene might work better on a liver chestnut than a cremello, for instance. -
@silverborn Thank you, this was exactly what I wanted to know!
