CLynnRose's New Experience Log as "Dappleganger"
  • I've been meaning to start from scratch as an experiment for a few weeks now, so this works out perfectly! I'm going to log my progress here as well as include any other new player interface/experience suggestions I might have. It might be tricky but I'm going to try to think back to what it was like when I really was a new player as well and play as though I didn't already have an established strategy. We'll see how it goes! :)

  • Idea to Make Locations on Site Easier to Find and Feel More "Real"

I remember when I first joined years ago that it was a few weeks before I heard about the Foundation Rescue. And then it took some digging on the forum to find out how to find it. Maybe there could be a direct link to the horses for sale from user 13 under the "Community" section of the menu, labeled "Foundation Rescue"? Maybe the same with the Lined Rescue? I had been playing for over a year before I first heard about that, and I'm still not 100% certain how and when to find it. There could also be direct links labeled "Auction Barn" (from the auction house, the player could go to the search instead of the current, limited listing), "Sales Barn" (search of all horses for sale). (The links would only have to be updated if there was a change to the search page that made the old links go dead.) This would be a simple interface change that wouldn't require additional game logic code and would just make these locations feel more real and also more intuitive to find. I just remember that it took a real shift in thinking for me to realize that the official, game-owned parts of the game were actually just player accounts, not special pages or locations on the site, and I had to know what search filters to enter in order to find them, which of course at first, I didn't. This seems to be a common problem for new players as well.

It also seems to me like over the years the site has grown a lot and been added to without much planning. A lot of things are tucked away in obscure corners of the site (especially under the different sections of the homepage) and are difficult to find. It's not intuitive at all. A lot of information is hard to find or understand on various pages (for example, I only recently learned what the abbreviations and numbers in parentheses next to straws mean in the advanced breeding lab. I never would have figured out what these numbers and stats mean and there's no link to a page that explains it there either.) or has been added to in bits and pieces so that the text isn't very well-organized anymore, like the information that's been added to the top of pasture pages.

I think something that could help would be cross-referencing pages and sections throughout the site more. For example, at the bottom of the create a horse page where the daily herd helper is, have a link to the full list of all herd helpers so new players can browse them and better judge which ones they want to activate or hunt for. I remember when I first started, I activated the first herd helper I saw on my account, a Red Based Gray, spent all my hbs creating horses with it, and thought that they must be very special. I didn't know that re-rolling would get rid of the current herd helper and not allow me to go back. I had no idea how many herd helpers there were or which were rare ones, worth activating, or what sorts of traits they could guarantee. I couldn't figure out why, when I finally found the herd helper shares on the forum, so many of them were already expired or used up. Weren't those shares ever going to be good or valid? I didn't find one that was for a long time. When I realized I had played myself into a dead end, I felt like I had made a mistake and should start over (I even asked on the forum if I should). If there were more links to information when and where the player needs it, I think players would be less likely to make "mistakes" and feel badly. The game should be setup with fail safes to help new players feel good about their progress.

I honestly think the whole site, the GUI at least, should really be redesigned from scratch on a flowchart, and organize everything with new players in mind. Try to re-imagine the organization of the site and think about where new players will be most likely to look for various pages and where they will most need to be directed to explanations and information. Everything to do with herd helpers should be found together, everything to do with showing should be found together, and so forth. I can imagine what this might look like, and I think it could help new players be able to find things on their own, without having to feel silly about asking basic questions on the forum.

  • Idea for Tutorial System - "HaJ Academy"

This game is very detailed with a lot of information to try to take in (and I know as a newbie I didn't like realizing how much I screwed up at the start) so I think the tutorial/achievements system could be a little bit more hand-holdy, just at the start. I'm not a big fan of "forced" tutorials where you have to do what you're told in order to advance, but maybe there could be a HaJ Academy with trainings new players can sign up for, apart from the achievements, which are a little passive and don't teach much about why you're doing what you're told to do. That way the player can choose to do the training and will be more likely to follow through and appreciate and understand the information because it's something they elected to do. It could also come with goodies that help the player follow the tutorial.

For example, a "How to Show Your Horses" training could start by giving the player an Exceptional Show Horses HH when they sign up for the training. It could prompt the player then to navigate to the create a horse page where that HH is activated, and it could explain more about herd helpers and what it means that this one creates all Exceptional Show Horses. It could go on to show the player how to enter the horses into shows, and when the show finishes and the horse places, there could be an alert congratulating the player and then go directly to the horse's show results and explain what they mean. That way all of the information is given in context when the player is actually doing these things, so it's like show, don't tell. Information makes more sense to people when they're given it when they need it, answering the player's questions as they have them. This would give the player bite-sized information, in context, right when the player needs it. Otherwise a player might go to read the help files and either not be able to find what they're looking for, or they'll find things that they don't understand because they aren't asking those questions yet. They might understand that it must be useful information and trust that it'll make sense later, but they have to try to remember it all until later when it will make sense in the context of their gameplay.

A "HaJ Academy" could also have its own dashboard and alert center, similar to the Gift Exchange. Its own page where you can see the trainings to sign up for, the trainings you are signed up for, and an alerts area. When there's something new to do or a new lesson to follow in the training (like when your first show horse finishes its first show) there could be a red dot notification and symbol at the top of the page (like the GE, chatroom, and inbox logos). Then the player could go to the HaJ Academy center, read about what their achievement means, and follow the next step.

As an aside, I also think the user guide should be rewritten in to full articles, written in natural language. As it is, it's a little vague and not detailed enough to make sense unless the player already understands. It's also full of outdated information and terminology. (That's true throughout the site.)

    Edit to add:

I think players want to be able to see things and understand them before they do them. As it is now, the game is set up so that you often have to just make mistakes and learn the hard way, and that's not as enjoyable. I'd love to be able to see much more "here's what this would look/be like if you did this" before I actually make that move, or buy that upgrade, things like that.

A HaJ Academy could have three basic trainings to start: How to Show Your Horses (could give ex show hh and lead through steps with explanations of what show stats mean), How to Breed Your Horses (could give perf foundie hh and lead through steps with explanations of what breeding stats mean), and How to Build Your Stable (buying, selling, finding your niche/building your brand, interacting with other players). These would be prerequisites that would unlock other trainings: How to Create Your Dream Horse (GMT lab and RGS tutorial), How to Use the Horse Search, etc. These later trainings would be grayed-out, but visible, so players aren't overwhelmed but can still see what to look forward to next. Additional trainings could unlock when an upgrade is purchased: How to Use Advanced Breeding Lab, etc.

  • Problems With Current Showing System (As I See It)

The new point goal incentives added to the achievement tasks are great, though they still only drag players along until they can discover for themselves that showing is what's going to make them hbs to fund their breeding goals. It's sort of like shoving medicine in someone's mouth and holding it there until they stop struggling long enough to realize that it's actually good for them. If you want showing to be something that new players actually want to do from the start, showing needs to be made more part of the game. Part of the fun and strategy, not just a chore that takes up time and space. The game is advertised as a horse genetics game, that's why people come here, to breed horses and go after pretty colors. Showing just doesn't seem important to new players. It seems like something you should be able to leave alone if you want (and of course, you can if you're willing to spend real money) and I think there's a tendency to feel left out when you think the shiny genes are out of reach unless you have a big show herd and that's not something you've been building all along.

Maybe offer more showing automation features to new players, so they don't have to do so much what really just feels like dull work to new players in training and showing individually. It's inherently difficult for new players to show, and easy for upgraded players to show. I know not all new players are playing on free or basic accounts, but most probably will be at least at first. (The game makes showing the most difficult for new players, when it should be encouraging new players to enter in shows and build their show herd.) Either that or make showing more fun! Make it part of the strategy of the game, so you can maybe do even better at showing by doing it manually than the automation can? Or have more traits that make a show horse good or bad rather than the single measure of PT, and make them heritable? (I know that would be a huge change to the game, so probably won't happen. But I remember the Western Horse Game seemed to have something like that, lots of traits that made a horse good or bad at different disciplines.) Or maybe just make a bigger deal out of show results early on? Like a notification on your homepage the first time a horse of yours places 1st, and maybe a goodie to unlock when that happens? Then there could also be an explanation of the leader boards at the same time and explain how and why to try to compete there. (Or maybe that could be the last lesson of the HaJ Academy training on How to Show Your Horses?)

Also, when it comes to the importance of show ponies vs breeding horses, I noticed this comment you asked on Bluegrass: "But honestly, I do not understand people's obsession with getting the smallest number of snipped foals."

It's because it seems like a failure when you get the test results back and see snipped foals, like they weren't good enough, and that's why they were snipped. (Maybe the wording of the test results could be changed slightly so it doesn't sound that way?) It was a big shift for me in my thinking to realize that snipped horses could still be good horses. In my head, when I started playing, I thought a horse that was good enough to show must be a horse you would want to have pass on his genes, so he must be a good breeder too, right? If he's not good enough to breed... what are you showing him for? It just seemed so counterintuitive to me to "show off" the horses that weren't good enough to breed. And what are the breeders passing on to their offspring if they aren't good enough to show? I kinda get it now. Showing is an industry and it isn't really about quality. It's about quantity and playing the system. Also, when it comes to getting fewer snipped foals, I know for me, I like to see intact foals because I want to be able to continue the line. I don't want it to hit a dead end, even if all those snips might be excellent show horses. When they age out of the game, that line is gone and then what was the point?

  • Random Thoughts and Ideas

When I first created my very first account, didn't realize that my username was going to be my identity as a player, not just for login, and that most players were going to have "stable" or "farm" as part of their name like an actual stable name. Maybe if the way the username is going to be displayed within the game were more clear before signup, that wouldn't have been a problem. Or maybe that was just me. (Also, the welcome email still only lists H&J 1 and 2 servers, not Mesa.)

I would love to be able to choose whether or not points go onto a new create. That way if I'm making a rank special or exceptional producer (especially because they might have a terrible PT) or another horse that I want mainly as a breeder, I can choose to create it without points or if I get an exceptional show horses herd helper I can have them come out with points. It could be a checkbox on the create a horse form. Especially with the new pointed creates cap, it would be great to be able to be more strategic with which horses get points and which don't.

Maybe there could be a "beginner mode" to the interface that would show certain explanations and then those could disappear after a month or so or when disabled on the homepage. Like "optimization mode"? It could be a beginner/advanced toggle. So there could be an explanation at the top of the search page about the Foundation Rescue. More detailed explanation about herd helpers on the herd helper page. And so forth.

I remember way back when, searching online, specifically looking for a horse game to play, I think I came across this site. I remember that the head carriage of the horse was really low, and there was only a plain blue background. There's no comparison to the graphics today, they are pure eye candy! But back then, it was the attractiveness of the interface of the other horse game that drew me in kept me playing there as long as I did, even though it had no substance compared to HaJ. Simple things like a graphic of a stable or pasture on the page of the stable or pasture made a huge difference for me. I think the site overall could still benefit from a more attractive design. Design the GUI in a way that makes the game seem like more than the code actually is underneath. That's good storytelling in game design. Think how many different pinball games there are and how different they feel to play just because of the graphics and storytelling, even though they are all basically exactly the same.

  • As for my actual experience playing this account, I found it to be very easy to progress and make money without hitting dead ends, something that was a big obstacle for me when I first started playing on Bluegrass. Still, I knew where everything was and how to play the game (something I still think could be an obstacle for actual new players), but the pointed creates (and RSs this month) allowed me to make enough hbs to buy my first 1000-stall barn in only 19 days. I didn't even take the starter package by introducing myself on the forum or make a point of following the achievements. Despite the recommendation of pricing pointed creates at half lifetime payout, I found it quite easy to move a lot of my creates for full lifetime payout. Now that I no longer create pointed creates, I'm looking forward to continuing this experiment and documenting starting a show herd from scratch next month. :)
