Created my account - this is a little confusing. The account successfully creates, but it's not *obvious* that that's the case. I remember back in the day creating three accounts before I realized that they were all successful. The screen should change substantially here, not just the text on it.Folly's Marionette #54601

As a new player, I know that I need hbs (and lots of them) to do anything fun. Seeing that these pointed creates are worth some cash suggests that I can try selling them, but how should I price them? As an experienced player I have a formula that I know will work, but as a complete newbie I can only guess. I list my brand-new create (in this case a simple Bay Splash Tobiano mare) for 50% of her current lifetime payout...
Hey. What's this current lifetime payout thing? I'd love to see this link directly to its explanation in the (well-formatted, user-friendly) FAQ.
I type in my sale price (18,954 hbs) and click Sell Horse, only to be met with a message informing me that the suggested price for new creates is a mere 2500 hbs! Oh no, did I ask for too much? Maybe I'd better rethink this, where do I go for information? If I'm not socially inclined (and I wasn't when I first started oh who am I kidding I'm still not), it's off-putting to have to find someone to ask. So I try to search the forum, but the search function there is absolutely miserable. I've been playing since 2018 and still haven't figured it out.Folly's Marionette #54601

Testing - the user guide says I need to use every test on any horse I might want to breed or sell. It also mentions that "Several of the tests are free." Um, no? Only the breeding advice is free, so that's a bit misleading. I'd like to see what the genetics are behind some of these horse coat colors, but I already spent all of my money today creating horses, and there is nothing left for testing them. I hope other players will be willing to buy these horses not knowing anything about them.
Let's see, each of these horses earns a daily payout, so daily money to my account. Now I'll go through my barn and look at each horse and get out my calculator and add all of this up, and I earn... ooof. A whopping 1,442 per day. Not even enough to create a horse tomorrow, but hey I can make another one on Friday. I sure hope some of these horses I created today sell.
(I will probably have to log in two or three times before I discover that my Member Home page tells me how much I earn each day so I won't have to break out my calculator.)
Edit: I have exactly enough hbs left to run genetics testing on the Rank Special horses I created today, so let's see what makes them so special.Folly's Marionette #54601

Oh hey, somebody bought that Hidden Gates within 5 minutes of me posting it. Wonder what made it so special? But now I have money to run the gene test on the others.Folly's Marionette #54601

Thought: Entering horses in shows is so tedious. I wish there was a way to do this automatically.
When you expand the achievement instructions for adding tack to a horse, it says you can unlock additional items on the upgrade pages. There should be a note that says upgrades can also provide auto training, auto entry, one-click barn entry.
I should mention here that I'm trying to do this strictly as a player who is unable to use RL money for game purchases.Folly's Marionette #54601
Main Account: Folly's Fantasies #43484 -
Basic upgrade doesn't give auto entry but does enter an entire barn and can be obtained for free. Maybe calling attention to that on the manual show entry pages would be good.Main account Pinkie2 51202

RE the breeding achievement - "Breed your mare and stallion to produce a foal"
The instructions tell me how to use in-house breeding, but it costs me 1001 hbs to breed them and I only get 500hbs as the achievement reward. Sure there's 12.5% of a bonus stall, but those bonus stalls mean pretty much nothing to new players. Money is everything.
ETA: There are several achievements that only pay bonus stall %. Maybe everything should have at least a small hb reward.Folly's Marionette #54601

I wish I could link directly to a search of specific herd helpers from the My Herd Helper Collection page. We can do it from the HH tattoo on a horse page, it would be lovely to look at this big old list of HH and be able to click the title and go to that same search.
ETA: that might be more of an experienced player thing? There's still the newbie question of what exactly a HH is, what it does, and what makes one more special than another. And it's not like the HH collection page is easy to find, you pretty much have to be specifically looking for it, but maybe this would somehow help.Folly's Marionette #54601

Continuing my thought about "money is everything" vs "bonus stalls" - That whole bonus stall thing could really use some more exposure, if it's going to be an achievement reward. Like, how quickly can you build? What are the bonuses you earn (i.e. +.5% per create, -.5% for any horse sold at auction)? It does show you your last three bonus-earning transactions, so if you're paying attention you can figure it out. Stalls are earned so very slowly that I never even notice when/if I earn a new one. My focus has always been on those all-important hbs that allow me to buy IVs that allow me to buy barns.Folly's Marionette #54601

You earn stalls so slowly! My oldest account is bluegrass. I've been on there for 2.5 years and have 33 bonus stalls. The amount of barn space I've gotten from buying barns blows that out of the water. I definitely think changing the achievements from earning a percentage of a stall to earning more hbs or entire stalls/another entire barn would be much more helpful!Main account Pinkie2 51202

I do love that a basic upgrade can be had for a steep discount and how prominently it's displayed on the page. For new players who don't have access to RL money purchases for whatever reason, perhaps that first short-term basic upgrade could also be attainable for a commensurately discounted number of IVs (one time only of course)? I've been selling my pointed creates for 4 days, priced as an experienced player would price them, and now have enough to purchase one with IVs (yay!). While the game is a business and intended to make money for Ammit, let that come from players who have been here for a couple of months and are starting to figure out how things work and are ready to move on with purchases like that.
A note on my pointed creates - they didn't move as quickly as I expected, perhaps due to the large number of puppet accounts currently producing points.Folly's Marionette #54601

I think the tutorial needs to be much expanded, and last for more than a few days. I'm working on ideas of how to do that.
Make the benefits of upgrades more obvious, by using the tutorial to coach the player to buy that first promotional basic upgrade either with cash or with IVs - at that discounted price I mentioned in my previous thought.
Working the math for that - a basic upgrade for 1 year with RL money costs $25. The promo price is $1.99, that's a 92% discount over the cost of a 1-year upgrade but you only get it for three months (very reasonable!). Using those numbers, a 3-month promo basic upgrade would cost 2.388 IVs, so bump it to three or maybe as high as 6 (doing apples-to-apples math, comparing the cash price of a 3-month upgrade to the IV price for a 3-month upgrade, the discounted IV cost would be 6 IVs [75,000 hb], and that's an 80% discount.)
The reward for that would of course be the basic upgrade and all that it entails, but a maybe a reward of hbs to recoup some of the money spent? If the first 3-month basic upgrade could be obtained for 6 IVs, perhaps an hb reward of 12,500 to recoup the equivalent of 1 IV for the player.
Related thought that just struck me - I just started a kid-oriented horse game on my phone, and as it coaches me through the tutorial, it often gives me enough resources to do the required task, particularly when the task requires the nearly-impossible-to-earn diamonds.Folly's Marionette #54601

Still thinking about achievements. In the coloring app on my phone, I have a list of achievements a mile long, and each time I obtain a reward it resets that achievement to a higher goal. Of course, all of these goals involve how many pictures from a certain category I have colored, so not directly applicable to HAJ. But I have thought several times over the last couple of years that I would love an ongoing achievement board. I just don't know how it would work!
I wouldn't use achievements that require RL money purchases, like adding pastures, but keep scaling up? Buy a new barn, buy a bigger barn, buy a bigger barn, buy a tack pack, buy a GMT, use a GMT? These things are by default limited, so no matter what the goals have to end somewhere. At that point we switch to focusing on leaderboards, maybe? I'm so confused by those, so I just breed how I breed and am get excited when one of my horses pops up on one.Folly's Marionette #54601

I feel like I need to add a disclaimer.
These are just brainstorming, stream of consciousness type thoughts. They are not necessarily realistic, attainable, implementable, etc.Folly's Marionette #54601

Once a basic upgrade is acquired, coach players through changing their stable settings under Account and Stable Management.
-How many accounts are they associated with, and what is an associated account?
-Have you joined the newsletter mailing list (email preferences)?
-View the list of herd helpers (and this goes back to that other thought about the HH list having links to searches of those horses).
-Edit stable name, edit breed name - these would of course be dependent on at least a basic upgrade
-What's a stable header (screencap or mockup a horse image with a header) and where would I go to add one? Same for tattoos. Some suggestions on the header and tattoo pages maybe, suggesting they can design their own or ask for help on the forum.
-I had no idea until recently that there was a direct link to the auction bid watcher on the home page. I have always gone to the auction home page first.
-I also just today discovered the sales watch list. Woah. Does this also watch for auction listings? Going to have to try this out. It's a premium upgrade feature, so maybe doesn't apply to the tutorial thoughts, but I've been playing for a couple years and didn't know it existed.Folly's Marionette #54601

Yes, I'm happy to support the game because I have a good time but I was NOT ready when I was new. Many people don't want to spend RL money on games until they're sure it's a "good" investment because so many games are legit pay to win. This game really is not but game life is easier with upgrades at the very least.
But making the earlier parts of the game easier and more rewarding would make it easier to convert people into long term players. I think there's a point that people aren't talking about because we aren't there yet where the pointed creates run out and suddenly you have a 2000 hb daily income. What now? You can't even create a horse with that. I'd be willing to guess that's the point where a lot of people drop off so making it easier to get past that should make more long term players which is ultimately good for us all.Main account Pinkie2 51202 -
Was reading the Player Support chat on Mesa today and realized I had forgotten about the 16 years old to play rule. Who reads the Rules/TOS before, or even when, registering? I certainly didn't. Perhaps on the "Join Now" screen there needs to be a disclaimer about minimum age to play, or a birthdate gateway. That certainly wouldn't stop them, of course, but might cause some to rethink.Folly's Marionette #54601

Oof I don't think I remember ever seeing anything about an age. It makes sense, but I'm sure I ignored that. When I first came over to HAJinc from another game at the start of Hunt and Jump, I would have been 15 and the player who talked me into starting was younger than me...Alternate account of StormwoodFarm (#50888)

I haven't been paying enough attention to this account. Or maybe I have, actually. My barns and are full, barely enough room for those upcoming HH creates, and I don't want to sell off any of my points. I bought a 60-stall barn and filled it. There's no room for any more breeding, and the foals I did breed I sent to auction because I'm an experienced player and I know that the profit from auction outweighs pigging up stalls at this point. I'm unwilling to purchase tack packs, so there's no killing time tacking up my horses. The difference between me and a new player is that I have an established account that I can spend lots of time in, rearranging pastures and sorting thousands of foals. It's June, so also time for the semi-annual mare purge and reassessment of breeding goals.Folly's Marionette #54601
