How do you choose benchmarks?
-
I'm even breeding with one herd and bootstrapping another, and I would love to hear some about how you actually choose/figure out benchmark ponies. Is it your BIPs that test better than other BIPs? Is it something where you comp test 50 different studs from the same generation? How does it work in your herd?
-
I started by comparison testing studs of the generation against eachother. If I ever had any “worse” than another of the same gen, he was culled and I looked into his lineage. I did the same for everybody, and once I figured out who was good or “as good” as the others, I could narrow it down to 3 to 5 studs per generation. Now it’s easy! I just compare it to whoever tests highest. If I ever purchase a stud, I immediately test him.
Some genetics are stronger than others. My A paper benchmark for my G2 actually used to be a medium-high papered B that I gave a boost to. Now he’s benchmark and everybody must test against him and be as good as or better. Once I find superior, he will be culled.
Long winded but I hope you understand how I mean.ID# 24891

It’s also a catch 22 though, because If your stuff tests higher than most (I say this because I only use B/Red foundations), your sales take a hit. Finding the correct recipients who can use my higher papered stuff is hard… I expect the critters to be able to have G4 Gold/Star papered foals. Sometimes when one of my critters get to somebody else’s herd they don’t do very well due to the gap in quality, ORRRR they do exceptionally well and produce several replacements.ID# 24891
