My home-breds seem to not be great show stock- what do I do?
  • So I've noticed lately that out of my show stock, the bootstrap foals that come from my own stock seem to place lower in shows than other stock that I've bought from others. Is this possibly a result of the mares or studs I'm using? Do foals inherit showing ability or is it random?

How do I breed better show horses?
  • Showing ability has a couple of factors.

1 - PT will tell you how long it will train, the higher the PT the better. This is hereditary.
2 - Unsure of this part but here goes - if you have a number of horses with the same PT, they will not all have the same showing abilities, some will be better than others. I do not think this is hereditary, but random. I have been meaning to run an experiment on this to see if I can predict showing ability based on same PTs and start point.
3 - at a single class level, final placement depends on who is in the show class with you. Sometimes you get a group of higher score horses in your class sometimes you won't. This is just random.

If you do a search on horses based on PT you will see there is a certain band of PTs that do well. 13.5 and up seem to do well and top the 8W shows. The PTs around 10.4 - 10.9 also do well as they top the 7W level. Where a horse ends up when it levels off has the greatest impact on its total point earning.

So - breed the best to the best - train every week, keep your fingers crossed and do not look at showing results of a horse until it levels off. If it ends up in a good spot (i.e. top half of its classes, preferably at the world level - 6W, 7W, 8W) it will earn you lots of points and hbs.

There are others here that can probably explain this better than I have. I am very open to comments and corrections.

  • I have a fairly rudimentary way to cull my show stock. I wait until they are 14, then make sure they have at least 500 points. If they don't they get sold. 15yo must have 600, 16 700 and anything over that 800. It works for me, but some may say that I hold onto some that should be culled. You really don't want to judge anyone who hasn't leveled off in their training. Some may start at the bottom, but work their way up to being one of the best.
  • How old are they? What is their pt score?

I don’t even look at my show horses until they are 10.

10-11 pt and 13+ pt are typically my best show horses. There will be outliers though.

  • PT is not hereditary. :) All horses with the same PT have the same training ability.

  • Thank-you Ammit. Question then, if PT is not hereditary, is it the breeding ability that drives the foals PT?
  • Yup! Pt is inherited from a horse's parents but is not passed on to their foals. A horse with a PT of 10 and a PT of 12 can have identical breeding abilities.

  • Years ago I made a graph of hundreds of horses based on PT and lifetime points and it was interesting my results. I wish I could find it again. It wasn't exactly always PT meant more points because at a certain point they end up getting to the bottom point of a class or whatever

  • @Ammit I don't mean to be dense, but I am heartily confused by that statement - how is PT inherited from parents but not passed to foals?
  • @hunterundersaddlegirl did you have 13, 14 pts when you did your calculations?

I just checked my 15 year old show horses. I have 8 pages. Sorted by points earned this year it takes 5 pages before anything other than a 13+ pt horse shows up. These are all leveled horses.

This is a nice show horse that wins most classes and it doesn’t come close to the points of even my average 13+ show horses.

Maybe my bootstrap show horses are just super good at showing? I’m not sure. I know that I’ve been auctioning off anything below 13 lately and it’s working great for me.

I find that 10-11 are great show horses until they level. 13+ seem to be average/okay show horses until leveling & then become great show horses. But that’s all from my personal lines. I don’t buy outside show horses.
  • I haven't even been looking to cull yet! I have plenty of space at the moment and still trying to build my show bonus so I'm keeping everything until space becomes a problem. Some point is better than none at the moment :)

So @pestilenttempest to answer your question, I was looking mostly at my first couple crops of bootstrap foals which are now 5-6 years old. PT score in the 12-13 range mostly. I just happened to look through a few and noticed that most of them seem to be placing towards the lower half of their classes in shows.

So even foals of my highest PT stud and mare seem like their placement is a little low. I know PT determines how long a horse can train rather than how well they will do, but I'm struggling to find a metric that will help me breed towards better show horses? Is there one, or is this one of those hidden numbers that only mods get to know?

If it helps, the foals in question would be almost completely from gold mares and a star stud, and the sire at least is over 14 pt and consistent. Pt for the mares is in the low to mid 13s for the most part, consistency varies.

I can't get my bootstraps pt scores to go over about 13.6 either so I feel like maybe I'm missing something fundamental.
  • Bootstrap scores are extremely hard to raise without boosting. There’s a reason anybody with high pt foals have double boosted studs. If can be done but it takes exponentially longer. This is why I don’t worry about selling horses from my lines off. Anybody would have to double boost to try to keep pace and most players (bar some of us crazies who double boost every month) won’t ever be able to compete.

As far as show horses go, you won’t really notice your horses gaining tons of points until they level out. 12-13 pt horses will need to be 12-13 pt before they start gaining points consistently. Typically and 10-11 pt horses gain points faster when they are younger but stop gaining as many points when they level off (in my experience. Other peoples experience may vary). Typically if you can get pointed foundation horses/2nd gen horses they will more likely boost you up faster…but higher pts end up with much more points in the long run (again in my experience. Not sure if this is just from my bootstrap program or an all-game thing)

I don’t look at my show horses until 10 years of age. If they have at least 500 points by 10 years old they are worth keeping to me. I know many people use the same culling method I didn’t develop it.

Fun fact: One of my best show horses actually never won a single class. He lived to be so old that he managed to maneuver his way into high points without ever winning.
  • That's crazy! So I'm just judging them too soon then? That makes me feel a bit better. I've been less active lately than I was around the holidays, but I'm glad I've still been getting on to show regularly every week. Once I know what I want to do with my lines I'll hopefully has a much more solid show bonus from it at least.
