Gen6 stallions vs mares
  • For the last couple of seasons I have been struggling with my gen6 herd! I seem to be getting a lot more intact stallions then mares after strict breeding advice, even if per-snip the proportions were close. Is this normal? I'm trying to decide if it is worth it for me to select some of the colts for switching the gender...

  • Probably means your mares are higher than your stallion so the stud colts will test better than their father and the fillies might be testing worse or as good as their mothers. I've stated comp testing fillies and colts because my higher lines are also struggling even with pasture bonus my best in/of pasrure foals are only testing AGA

  • That would make sense, I've been trying to sort through my herd so hopefully it starts to get better!

  • I had to start rebuilding my Summertree Farms account because of the 'mare lag'. I was up to 10G and barely getting any intact foals. So I went back to the beginning and started breeding C papered stallions to Red papered mares. I've only got the 2nd or 3rd generation of those foals going, so I'm still waiting to see how it works.

I do the same as you, Wolfgang Pride, I comp test everything, and snip anything that is not superior.

  • I've just been auctioning anything not superior. I don't keep many spayed/gelded foals i have 4 barns full right now. But even some superior foals if they don't paper right I sell them too I gotta crack down hard

  • @Confluence Farm
I be really interested to see how you c/red pepper line progresses. That is a really interesting idea to go with.
I to struggle with my line after gen5. I've tired what I called my high test line starting with best foundation and adding the bonus and then only pasture breeding them. I'm getting a ton of culls. I say 1/4 ratio. I finally got irritated and gave up on it for a little while. Lol
Then go figure my fantasy bootstrap willy-nilly line is doing fantastic on I believe my 8th or 9th generation? Im pulling my hair!
  • I've always tested my colts and prefer ones that are "better then" the sire. But I do have some tolerance for better gene combos/chimeras. I love the chimeras so I have been breeding them even if they are just "as good as" the sire. But I should probably stop that! I have a couple of chimera boys now that are superior to their sire.

  • I absolutely run SBA, and I hand geld/spay anything that passes SBS 'about as good as' their same sex parent.

@MakeMeABird - I haven't gotten to the higher generations yet, and I'm just
breeding based on paper level after 1G, and I am not very good at running scientific experiments, but I will let you know if I notice any difference!
