When you merge 2 accounts do you have to cancel the account to be merged with Paypal?

I'm not a expert on this because I don't have premium, but I believe after you merge only the account that still exists can trigger a please pay me notice in PayPal. I've not seen anyone have trouble with merging in a couple years.45120

You can not merge an account with a premium upgrage. Merge will not cancel a subscription so we do not allow premium accounts to be merged to prevent issues.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.
