Coming up with a code to remember what the horses have?
-
How does one do this? I am not very good at coming up with stuff so was wondering if someone who does this can tell me how they did it. I am wanting to do a code for my fantasy genes, KP, gp, and satin. Mushroom, shatterglass, and chin. Does one use the alphabet or numbers.
-
I use the alphabet. I pick a letter to represent a gene and then add it as a suffix to their name. Capitals represent homozygous genes and lower case letters represent heterozygous genes.
Some examples of my codes:
K=KP
G=GP
T=satin
U=mushroom
A=shatterglass
L=chinchilla
So a horse with KP, GP and chinchilla would be " (name) KGL"ID# 25784 -
I was using tattoos but I'm not anymore purely because I have mixed lines and I'm not worried about crossing genesWolfgang Pride ID 554
Always willing to help. Licensed for everything. Specialize in Liver Chestnuts, Chocolate Palominos, Sabino, Tobiano. But I breed everything except Frame

I don't label everything, because my lines are mostly all mixed together anyway. But I might label chinchilla and mushroom separate, just with a ch or mu. Many things like satin and shatterglass genes can go in any line so I don't label them
-
My code has gotten super confusing because Ammit keeps introducing new genes!
Before the base color part of the code:
D Dense Pheomelanin
F Snowflake
K Kit Promoter
k KP2
o Onyx
d Dun Factor Promoter 1 or 2
h chinchilla
p any phantom
g shatterglass
J Gulastra plume
u mushroom
Q Axiom (not Nexus)
V Wrong Warp
H thunderstruck
s sunshine or snowdrop
b chocolate
Then comes the color and markings code
e chestnut/red base
E black
A bay
t brown
w wild bay
c cream
p pearl
D dun
d nd1
C champagne
Y sooty +
Z silver
q satin
y tiger eye
G grey
f flaxen
W white 1
t white 2
h white 3
T Tobiano
r roan
s sabino 1
b sabino 2
M Kit M
e white 8
x white 10
S splash 1,2, 3
m Splash M
L appy
R rabicano
O frame
B brindle/chimera
And then other fantasy codes
P watercolor
p plaid
N nacre
b paintbrush
i ice
X nexus
Im sure I’m missing things. Obviously this code started when I had a fairly simple herd and I’ve just expanded it as new genes have been added, but as you can see I’ve reused the same letters multiple times, which can get confusing.
When I have too many letters to add, I eliminate a lot of the middle section unless they are genes that might contribute to lethal foals. -
I also use S for superior colts like S 3G Zuko and BIP for Best Of Pasture so like S 3G Zuko BIPWolfgang Pride ID 554

My naming system is very simplistic.
3S Mocha sfKGPspsaxmucn 114B
Would be:
Gen 3
Superior to parent
Sire abbreviation
sf - het snowflake (I also use s)
K - hom kit promoter (I also use kp)
GP - hom gulasta plume (I also use g)
sp - het sooty +
sa - het satin (I also abbreviate and use the "a" after sp)
x - het nexus (I also use nx)
mu - het mushroom
cn - het chinchilla
I just use generic code names on my highlighted genes. I dont label base coats.ID# 24891

I don't worry too much about all the genes - unless it's something I would cull on, I don't see a need to get specific. My bootstraps are all marked with B and nothing else because it's just a free-for-all, and then past that I only mark them as part of the line they're in. My snowflake/kp line is marked SK with gen number, so 2SK, 3SK, etc, and if they're missing the hom for either gene I'll drop it to 2K, 3S, etc (but most of those get culled anyways, and only stick around if there's something else I like.
My Ch/sa/prl line I've given the nickname "shine line" so they're just marked with SL at the beginning of their names. mushrooms (though I got rid of that line a while ago) were 2H/3H/4H etc.
I think the first thing you need to ask is why do you need to keep track of what they have - is it to pair straws and eggs easier? to cull? to organize? Answering that will help you decide which ones you really need to mark. For myself, I cull visually so I need to have their pictures up in search anyways (so their genes are right there) and I organize by line and generation alone, with each line in its own barn, so the only reason I really need any sort of code is just to keep lines distinguished when I'm in the advanced breeding lab and to make it faster to pair straws with eggs/mares. Because of that, my code can stay super simple. The more strict your lines are, the more likely you might need to get specific with your code.

My code is generation, name/id, superior, extra.
So 2g Flag SD sa bop, would be a second gen, superior dam/sire, het satin, best in pasture horse.
UE Dare Fire agabm, would be a bootstrap, that is as good as my benchmark.
3g Diva agabop BC, would be a third gen, as good as my best in pasture foal for that generation, out of my Blue China line.
UE Mage SD wbm. Would be a bootstrap superior to dam/sire. worse than benchmark horse.
If I’m trying to focus on adding satin exc to my line I will add sa or sasa to the end of my mare’s names so I can hand breed with more ease.
For the most part I try to keep my lines simple and besides a few key things, don’t add too much to the names. My biggest thing is generation and superior/aga. For accounts with multiple lines I have a way to know at a glance which line a horse belongs to. I try to cull out horses that don’t fit my long term goals so that I don’t have to worry about breeding X mare to Y stallion and only to Y stallion. -
Gen 2 and Gen 3 I code with a Sire abbrev, and the Generation. I screen out horses without the gene combos I want here so I know who's carrying what because of what their sires carried.
Ex SSRG2E is Second Star To The Right
SSRGoCP is a colt with Second Star and Ghost of Christmas Past for sires
Gen 4 and up, the horses are tracked into major lines Mushroom, Chinchilla, Ice, Snowflake, and Hatter (Tobiano Appie). Some of the horses have double designators if they represent two major lines well, ex SNFHatterG6E is a Gen 6 horse that carries Hom Snowflake and Lp/PATN1 +Tobiano
BtSt is a high PT showline designator.
