Sorting show horses
  • How do you sort/sell show horses? I’m rapidly running out of barn space and I feel like my daily bonus is not growing as much as I would think it would recently. I seem to be stuck at about 140,000hbs daily. I keep all gelded/spayed that are over 10.5 pt.

  • I don't generally sort or sell show ponies unless I'm really strapped for barn space. In that case, I sell anything that's inconsistent. To grow my daily bonus, I save up and buy more barns to fill with only show ponies.

  • I sell anything at age 10 with less than 500 points. I’m basically just paying to house them at that point and they give me more money auctioning them for their lifetime payout.

10-11 pt and especially 13+ pt are typically your best show horses. I have inconsistent horse that make me mega money so I don’t cull based on consistency.
  • I do a pretty major cull when my show horses turn 14 by searching by points earned this year. Those at the end get auctioned till I start opening decent show scores. If a foal makes it into my show barn it just lives there till 14. The rules for which foals get kept vary month to month depending on how much room roll over gives me.

  • Thank you! It is interesting too see the different strategies. I think my newest barn has just so many young horses (I have been doing a lot of breeding the last few months) that I am not noticing gains yet. But what is considered a good score? I've also heard that you want your show horses are certain show classes/levels but I don't remember what those were or if that is true...

  • *cough* *cough* I don't keep spayed/geldings unless I like them or the PT is over 11. My showing bonus isn't high but I make good money from auctioning them all. And YET I still have NO barn space cause I have to many breeders that's my problem I needa sort them

  • It probably is just time - give it two or three months and see how it starts looking. In the meantime, making space for more is always good, plus if you can get pointed creates that are expeprf/exshows and have 10.4 PT that's always a good boost.

As for me, I do much like pestilent does - I wait til 10, because that's the age it's worth culling as you can get more money in auction - and sell off any that are low pointed enough that their total lifetime isn't worth keeping around. I don't touch the ones over 15, though, because once they get past the initial 10 yo cull (aka have enough points they're worth keeping, 500-600+), there's a chance they won't age out and will make me more money than the lifetime payout says they will. I have some show horses still going strong at 30+!

Open barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask!
  • I only keep showers who have PTs of 11+, but that's mainly due to space. I've maxed out how many barns I can have and that number seems to keep me from running out of space. When I was growing I just picked a PT score and didn't keep anything below that, then gradually raised that number.

Mind you I was only culling foals based on that; anything that was already in the show barn just stayed there raking in money for me.
  • I've found that the 10-somethings tend to level off in a better place than the 11-somethings, funny enough, at least the consistent ones. Haven't the faintest why.

  • Yes 10-11 seems to be the lower sweet spot to me

13+ are my real money earners though.

These are my unculled 10 year old show horses for reference (based on points). As you Can see I haven’t so much as looked at them ^_^

  • I used to have a showing bonus over 300k (I started somewhere around 150-200k and it took me about 6-8 months to build up). My philosphy is that if you want your show bonus to grow, then your most valuable show horses are not only the ones with the most points total, but also the ones who are earning the most points per year. So rather than sorting horses by total points to cull, I used to cull show horses later in the month and cull the ones who were only earning 0-10 points in a month (that's less than 1hb in daily earnings).

Buying all the pointed foundations you can get your hands on is another surefire way to grow your daily bonus quickly.

Of course, then I was a total dork and accidentally auctioned 2000 show horses a few months ago, so I'm back down to about 160k/day.
