Brilliant Bootstraps - Checking In Again! How are your Boots Doing?
  • Alright all my bodacious bootstrapping buddies!
It has been around 9 months since our last check in!
I know you all have been having a blast and working hard on taking your lines to the next level.
Lots has happened. We have hit some pretty amazing milestones, the PT cap has been reached, and thanks to the discussions on double boosting the leaderboards have seen quite the shakeup from some stellar studs and mares. The bootstrapping world has been evolving quite a bit recently.

Previous bootstrapping check ins can be found:
    Here
    Here
    For your reading pleasure.

So! How are y’all doing? How are your bootstraps?
I want to hear all about what you have been doing and what your plans are for the future.
What are your goals, hopes, reservations?
What are your thoughts on the new leaderboard system? Do you have any champions or runners up making you proud?
Have you changed what your breed for? Is your culling and sorting system still the same?
Show me your latest stud lineups! Show me those spectacular mares!
As always, shout out to the players that have helped and/or inspired you!

Players new to bootstrapping, feel free to chime in. Tell us all about yourselves and ask questions!

I want you to gush your little hearts out! :x

    Bootstraps and Even Lines
  • Here on the BlackWyld things are slowly evolving.
I still breed for shiny black based horses, the bigger the better.
I am still more of a sentimental breeder with my main lines so my herd is just moseying along as I let each beloved stud live out his entire lifetime with many lovely ladies before replacing him. Since some of my main lines have reached the natural breeding ceiling I have splurged and boosted some of my newer boys.
I still don’t really bother with double boosting unless I am working on bringing up quality in a special breeding project fast. I just can’t keep up with some of you guys that have cornered the double boosting market, so to speak. I am happy just plodding along as I am for now with my horses averaging around 13 and 14 PT.
My interest for my ice project is sort of petering out as I am now getting some nice quality mares to muddle in with my main lines.
I am now just starting to slowly play with introducing DFP 1&2, KP2, Sunshine, Snowflake, and nd1 into my boots.
I have also taken interest in (become obsessed with) a couple of legacy horses, particularly a mare called Tagamon thanks to This Thread created by @HunterUnderSaddleGirl, and also Skip Jack for no particular reason I can explain. LOL!
I now am running 5 pastures for my bootstraps. Three 100 acre pastures for my best quality boots and my watercolour/ice/fantasy projects, a 60 acre pasture for my new DFP project, and a 30 acre pasture for my Tagamon project.

I have just started sorting my mares against a three tier benchmark system and assign them the following labels: A, B, C, or X.
A mares are right at the top of the natural breeding ceiling.
B mares are a step down (approximately 5%) from the natural breeding ceiling.
C mares are a step down (approximately 5%) from the B mares and are only retained if they carry optimal genetics from projects that are still lacking in higher quality mares.
X mares test inferior to C mares but are being retained because they hold genetics or lineages that I am trying to incorporate into my lines.

Here is my current stud lineup (In approximate order of breeding quality):

    The Main Boys:

    image
    BS BW Dickey Bird BIP

    13.70 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
My darling Dickey Bird continues to fill my pastures with amazing foals. He was the stud I wasn’t looking for but could not pass up when he showed up as BIP and a grandson of the wonderful Dixon. That he harkens back to Skip Jack as well makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

    image
    BS BW Avon

    13.40 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
I had been looking for the perfect boy to replace Aman as my new Into the West line stud and kept falling up short until I found an older mare with the perfect lineage for the line languishing in a barn. I cloned her and boosted that clone and here he is! I can’t wait to get this cutie into pasture! I am sad that his PT ended up lower than the horse he was cloned from.

    image
    BS BW Littoral Nirvana

    13.60 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
Nirvana will be doing his part to keep the legacy of one of my Enlightened Mind line going strong in my boots.

    image
    BS BW Tagamons Doubtless

    13.20 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
I cannot begin to express how excited I am for this amazing boy!
I have mentioned that I had become a bit obsessed with a mare named Tagamon. HUSG was incredibly kind enough to entrust me with a few of Tagamon’s eggs and this incredible boy is the double boosted (aka a boosted clone) product of one of those eggs paired with a straw from @pestilenttempest’s phenomenal stud, OneFinalDoubt. He is at least one or two steps above the natural breeding ceiling. I did not expect to ever get a Tagamon offspring of this high quality, even with boosting. I cannot wait to try him out this season and cement Tagamon’s legacy in my herd for many seasons to come.

    image
    BS BW PFR Darth Dunkle

    13.80 PT – 1% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
This is dear Dunkle’s last season and I am sad that I still have not found one of his offspring that will be a suitable replacement for my impromptu “Drunk Jedi” line.

    image
    BS BW PFR Balladeer

    13.50 PT – Perfectly Consistent
I don’t know if I intend to replace him but have loved the Mr. Meteoric Milestone genetics that he has sprinkled throughout my herd.

    The Fantasy Boys:

    image
    BS BW Rouges Iced Aurora

    13.10 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent

    image
    BS BW Sexy Heart

    13.00 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent

    image
    BS BW RogueSpaceGossip

    12.60 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
The newest addition to my fantasy ice project.

    The DFP1 Boys:

Trying these two out this season. Still have a loooong way to go.

  • Here in the WyldWood things are shaking up and I am super excited to get breeding!
I have some fantastic new studs that will be hitting the pastures in the next few seasons and I am giddy with anticipation!
I still breed for all things deep, dark, and delicious. Mainly hom DP. GP, and S+ in liver, bay, brown, and buckskin horses, the taller the better.
I am focusing on slowly and surely raising the quality of my stock, especially my legacy lines. I am not doing any PT or leaderboard chasing. I just can’t compete on this account.

I have a 100 acre pasture for my best of the best boots and three 60 acre pastures for my legacy lines.

I have incorporated the same A/B/C/X mare culling system here as I have over on the BlackWyld.
Since my main line has hit the natural breeding quality ceiling I am starting to foray into boosted studs.

My main line continues to be heavily influenced by Wildland Acres stock. I have been looking to add DFP 1&2 and nd1 to my boots and the amazing @Wildland Acres has once again generously helped me out with two spectacular studs.
My legacy projects are still going strong as I continue to play with adding the lineages of many great horses to my lines, including (but not limited to) Dance Between Two Oceans, Mr. Meteoric Milestone, Apocalyptic Horseman, Freaky Dreamer, Khansuudyn, Daintree Oolong, Day of the Moon, State of Origin, Blackbird Song, and BlueBerry.
My Heimdall riding horse project has just kicked into high gear this season with two new studs to replace my original boy so generously gifted to me by @Xceptional many seasons ago. I am so excited to get breeding!

Here is my stud line up:

    My Main Boys:

    image
    BS WW Secret Honours

    14.10 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
I will always remain forever grateful for the kindness and generosity of the amazing Wildland Acres. I contacted her last season when I realized that my main boy from her lines is now at risk of aging out. I had shamelessly snooped her barns for some older colts with nd1 that looked unused that I could ask about and she turned around and instead offered me this stellar Best of Pasture boy that she had considered retaining herself. With a 5% boost and a few tweaks he is the next greatest thing to hit the WyldWood. I can never thank her enough!

    image
    BS WW Secret Chevalier

    14.00 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
At the same time I was looking at Honours this lovely boy popped up and Wildland Acres was once again kind enough to let me take him home for my DFP1 project. I am absolutely over the moon to have this boy.

    image
    BS WW Bujgiin Khicheel BM

    13.50 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
My amazing boy is still going strong. I still get giddy every time I look at him. I still can’t believe how lucky I was to have him pop up in pasture 12 seasons ago. I am really considering cloning him and boosting his clone when he hits 17. I just can’t get enough of him!

    image
    BS Tough In The WyldWood

    14.20 PT – Perfectly Consistent
Oh! My beloved boy! I am so sentimental about this guy. He truly is the king of the WyldWood. I really wish I could clone him! I am going to be heartbroken when he ages out but his legacy lives on forever in my herds.

    My Heimdall Boys:

    image
    BS WW Heimdalls GoBird

    13.60 PT – 5% Boost – Perfectly Consistent
Thank you Xceptional for being so wonderful and sharing some of your amazing horses with me. I am officially a Heimdall addict! I am having a blast playing with this line and GoBird is going to be taking it to the next level!

    image
    BS Heimdalls DisDain

    13.30 PT – Perfectly Consistent
Is this boy not gorgeous! I regret not trying to boost him but could not wait to toss him into pasture after discovering him in a barn last season. I can’t wait for him to give me a son in the future that is worth boosting. Until then he is giving me the prettiest babies!

    My Legacy Project Boys:

  • I just started bootstrapping a herd last game year. Got a lovely stallion from the very kind HiddenCreek:

    https://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=8223975

I've been accumulating mares, either from rank specials or from people selling warmblood mares, and I'm planning to just breed until i have 29 red or above mares, then spay the yellow mares for show. Then I'll continue breeding for higher papered mares and once i get another *Star stallion I'll switch him out for Trendy.

I'm doing this herd along with breeding a light and a heavy program that are color based, so it's a slow process, but it's fun so far!
    Thanked by 2BlackWyld WyldWood
  • I actually almost completely stopped with my bootstrapping program. I was achieving max paper level and max pt score 5/10 times every season and was super disheartened by not being able to better my group at all. My mian bootstrap program is basically just a show horse generator. I'm over 750k+ daily and topped 800k daily last season before reset. I've got another 8 season with my high pt boy so I probably won't even worry about replacing him for a few more seasons. I'll have to actually try to get high pt again by then....but I have plenty of leftover double boosted mares to pair with him.

I decided to put a lot of my effort into my fantasy bootstraps. So I've been bringing them up to level slowly. Luckily, with the changes to the groups, my horses are now dominating multiple groups and earning me plenty of rewards.
    image
    Bo DarkSideoftheMoon

this boy is taking top in almost all of his groups monthly and I'm hoping he will bring up the quality of my fantasy bootstraps overall. I intermixed my regular bootstraps & my fantasy bootstraps the last few seasons to really bring my pt scores up fast and they are taking off. In the next few seasons I'll have tons of high pt mares and then just have to work on hom for the genes again.

I also have this cute little collectible boy I'm going to put to some mares:

overall my boots are just kinda hanging in there. ^_^ No real big changes just playing with some extra genes while making show horses.

  • @pestilenttempest That's a solid show bonus! What sort of maintenance do you have to run to keep it going? How many new foals?

  • I keep 250-400 foals depending on the season but they are all 13+ pt. I’ve started automatically auctioning anything under 13 pt. I’m almost at barn cap and lose about 300-500 horses at rollover. @lallyhop

I will keep 10-11 pt if I have the room but most of those get auctioned off as 10 year olds anyway. I sell anything that doesn’t have 500 points at 10.
  • I've been cutting my boot lines down the last couple seasons, slowly phasing out all the Era 0s in favor of my Era 3 line. (If anyone is interested in any of my Era 0 breeders, feel free to pm me.) This season I've cut back to just one stud, my best era 3 boy, and 50 mares that are mostly era 3s.

  • I'm a little late chiming in, but I'm struggling to keep up with virtual things with all real life is throwing at me. (Including some unplanned sheep babies!)

Like many of you, I feel like I've reached some sort of pinnacle with the bootstrap herds and my interested has definitely waned. That said, mine have been bred towards colors I like for a long time now and there is no way I'll give up on my shiny-show-pony producers. A lot of the colors I wanted to add have now been bred up to the natural breeding quality ceiling, although I'm currently working on adding halo varnish.

Next season I'll be trying something different than what I've been doing for a while to see if it makes things more interesting. For the most part my double boosted stallions will be languishing in the barns while some of their non-boosted sons head to the pastures. This will essentially be even breeding as both stallions and mares are at the breeding cap. Using breeding advice to weed out the weaker foals first should be cheaper than immediately using comparison testing for everything. Plus it will be interesting to see how many keeper foals I still get, and how much the PT scores will suffer.

  • My bootstrap herd is going interestingly.I went through a whole not feeling satisfied with my bootstrap herd and starting a hybrid herd instead a little while ago... But then I came across an interesting thing that may have shaken this up: This guy:
    image
    Burden of the Pheonix bX

He is Superior to his sire, a boy who had been a main bootstrap boy of mine until then... So apparently my herd is not to the ceiling so I am curious about that will happen when this guy get's his first crop of foals out next month and see how this improves my herd.
So now I have new interest in the herd hoping to get a second stud who is superior to Burden. Idealy with DFP1/DFP2... That probably won't happen... But I also am trying to decide if I try looking for choosing my new stud from a star foal of Faulkar the Betrayer when I use straws of his in January (I want to see Pheonix's foals first!!!) So now I have that going on.

Aside from that... I now have DFP1 well in my herd!!! But non of my home horses show stripes. XD

  • I am now in my second season of using mainly non-boosted (breeding cap level) studs and I find I'm really enjoying being able to use SBA to automatically identify all the foals of the same quality as the parents.

That said, there has been a very definite drop in the PT scores the foals are getting - which was probably to expected considering I was using only double boosted sires before. I used to expect my mares to have an AFPT of 14.0+ to stay in the herd, while now a foal scoring 14.0 is fairly rare. It makes things complicated when culling for sure. Not nearly as significant as the drop in PT scorss, the percentage of keeper foals is a bit down too - which I suppose will help in that I have to sell/retire less adult mares to make room for new.
  • I've been using my current-best guy, Pacifistic, for a few seasons now (six or seven?), and haven't gotten a single superior colt yet, so I've either hit a plateau or a cap... BUT I'm optimistic that if I've plateaued, I'll get past it soon, as I am starting to benchmark mares against this season's BIP. (She ought to be pretty close in quality to Pacifistic - she tests AGA my BIP from a couple seasons ago, which I'd turned into a colt long enough to confirm that my BIP was AGA Pac... so she's roughly.. .roughly AGA him, and none of my other mares test better, so benchmark set!)
It'll take me a few months, I imagine, to get to where all the mares going into the BS pasture meet that benchmark, but in the meantime, I've gone through the ones that don't, checking how many of their offspring are AGA Pac/the benchmark girl, and taken out the mares whose foals were consistently not. We'll see where we are by, say, June! ^_^

  • I now have another boy superior to my previous pasture stallions.... WHat's even better? He is a son of Faulkar and the DFP2 mare that I was excited about a few seasons ago! Now I have cleared out all dfp2 mares that do not meet my normal quality criteria which makes more room for higher quality mares and in turn better foals! image

  • I'm not doing much with my boots right now. Have the top 30 in pasture. I've been getting aga studs for about 6 months, but haven't thrown a superior boy yet. I'm hoping some of my younger ladies will be up to the task.

  • Question.

How do you know when you have hit the breeding cap? I breed bootstraps on bluegrass, and haven’t had any superior foals in over 7 months. All of my mares test aga to their dams, brothers, and best of pasture foals. They don’t test aga my two stallions, one is single boosted, and the other is a double boosted son of the first stallion. If I boost a foal once they test aga my single boosted stud. If I clone and boost again they test aga my second boy. Thoughts?

  • ... I thought I was at cap but then started getting colts aga to one of my studs but superior to another so... I guess not???
All into high quality black based primitive duns and bootstraps.
  • I’m always happy to sell colts that hit breeding cap for comparison testing on this server

Maybe ask an older bootstrapper in your sever?

I originally bred 2 double boosted together and found there was an absolute ceiling. I keep a few around to make sure I know where cap is every season. I only boost/double boost if they hit max cap/max pt so it’s pretty easy for me to keep track.

Also remember there’s always that 1% wiggle room that aga/superior can sit between. I don’t think it makes much of a difference in the end.
  • @pestilenttempest I'd love one of those cap colts if you don't mind, as well as if you have any that are at the absolute ceiling.

  • @pestilenttempest Thank you . I’ll go breed for one of those foals.

Edit. It appears I hit the breeding cap. Follow up question.

If I breed my cap horses together ie cap mares x cap stallions will their foals pass BA?
The aren’t passing right now, but I’ve been breeding them to stallions 5%, and 10% past the cap. So I feel it’s a no brainer why they aren’t passing.
  • I've taken to using mostly cap-level, unboosted horses and their best foals should definitely pass BA. Using SBA leaves only the ones on the exact same level as the parents intact, which is very useful and saves so much on comparison testing.
  • I’ll get them sent out later tonight.

Anything boosted is “above the Cap” so their foals cannot pass sba as a foal can only be at the cap.

  • Just making a couple moves over here lol. I merry Christmased myself a premium subscription so I've now made my first boosted clones in both of my boot herds, and im chomping at the bit to see how they do!
I SBAd mares on every level, I had to cut down somehow lol. Didn't hit my boot mares quite so hard, but still ran it on my lower PT mares and cut alot of them out of the breeding herd.
I was thrilled to see how all my boot boys did on the LBs this season! They're holding their own, I couldn't be more proud.

  • Guyyyyys, i'm seeing the "about" in the "about as good as" - my BIP colt this season (who has been named "Tilted" because of how thrown off i am) tested superior to his sire, which confused me since i haven't gotten a sup colt in months...
His sire tests "about as good as" Pacifistic (my benchmark til now), Tilted tests "about as good as" Pacifistic... but literally every other colt from this season who tested AGA Pac is testing worse than Tilted. So i guess Pac isn't at cap, Tilted is just a smidge better'n him, and all the others are a smidge worse?
Time to go comp test all my other studs against Tilted >.> (I'm unreasonably excited, despite the massive expense it will involve! lololol)
