Show Horses
  • At what age do you guys usually cull them from the herd?

Do you have parameters and milestones they have to meet to stay in your program?
  • I usually start culling them once they reach 10 and have leveled off (no longer train). I make sure to show my horses twice a week every week of the month. That is important for how I cull. Towards the middle of the month I go through and cull anything that has earned less than 20 points. When I had a smaller barn I culled less than 10. It is important to let them finish training before you start culling since a horse in training might not be earning many points but level off at the top of a class.
  • At this point I'm going through the auction and collecting pointed foundations that failed BA or were spelded by previous owner. I'm still very new and just trying to grow my show herd so i can afford more barns, though. The oldest horse I've gotten through auction is now 11, to give you some idea. All my home bred show pons top out around 7 currently.
  • I've been trying to figure out when and who I should cull. Most of my show herd is 21+ but mostly 26-29yrs now because I left for a bit, so I'm about to lose a lot anyway. Just not sure what to do. Been trying to buy up other people's pointed creates and various other horses too.
  • The best show horses are 13pt+. If you find them on auction or for sale they’re amazing. :)

I Cull my show horses at 10 years of age. They need to have 500 points regardless if they are leveled or not. Pretty much all of my 13+pts will have 1k or about at 10.

  • If I was you. I would dump all of your show horses over 16 in the auction then go raid the foundation resue with the money you get off of them. Picking either the highest pointed horses or the horses earning the most points right now. But that's just what I would do.

  • I was thinking about doing that, but some of my guys have a few thousand points and I guess it just scares me to lose all of that at once.
  • You will most likely lose a lot of them at rollover, if not all of them. This is why I suggested the auction. You could always keep a few favorites.
  • Probably over half of my 3k+ strong show herd is at risk of aging out lol. They bring me the most $$$. Every bit of time you get with them is so helpful and I look at it as lagniappe cause you aren't guaranteed anything from them past 17. Sending them to auction at 20+ years is only gonna bring you 2500 each, so not worth it if that horse is winning/placing well. And a young replacement will not have the points to help you right NOW, or they may level off in a bad place. Shoott, that dang 20+ horse might live to be 40! My best show pony passed away a couple seasons ago. She was 38 with almost 6k points, red papered, with a 10.6 Inconsistent PT. My next best is over 30. I'd be shocked if you lost every eligible horse to rollover.
I cull If they're placing towards the bottom of their class, aged 10+, and are levelled off. I don't have many pastures, so most of my mares, all my studs, and spelds act as show ponies. That helps tons. Intacts may not get as much training, but they can still bring in a ton of points. And all of them are culled by my above method unless they're something super special lol.
I can definitely help out with show stock if you want. I can send an assortment of ages so you'll have younger up and comers with higher pt and some levelled off ponies that are doing well. I have plenty.

  • @Windigo - I would love to work something out with you if you're willing!

Other than my 21, 23, 26, and 29 yr olds, my oldest is 7 or 11 in my show barn. I show most everybody, but all of my points are with my oldest ones and there are 127 that are 21+.
At this point I'm hoarding everything I can to try and keep up the modest show bonus I have.
  • @KaschStables, we sure can! I'll likely have to get back at you Monday though. I'm packing for a camping trip and will be out of town all weekend in the woods. I'm not sure what cell signal is gonna look like there but if I can get on this weekend I'll send you some!
