DFP 1&2 Expression Issues
  • I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why this boy's DFP1 and DFP2 are not expressing for me.

I have rerolled him a ton of times.
I had another player take a look at him in case I might have some sort of weird caching issue or something.
I have searched horses with genetics very close to his and they all see to be expressing just fine.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    What am I missing?

Help me build my black brindle army!
Always looking to buy B/Red foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.

I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me.
  • I'm thinking it's the hom Chn mixed with Silver/Prl. The only one I can find similar that shows no markings is this horse. In this case, silver, champagne, and specialized cream alleles have caused a general lightening overall.

  • I think i had a similar issue with a few foals that i unfortunately auctioned off, but I think both of the foals i had issues with showing had nd1. Its not supposed to be dominant to Dun at all i dont think, but when D/nd1 horses look different than just D horses. I feel like i saw somewhere that that wasnt supposed to be the case. But if that is the issue, it could be stopping it from showing because its acting dominant when its not supposed to.

  • @ChrystalBlues I had wondered about the pearl/chinchilla combo as well.

  • @VioletStables

nd1 was the first thing I looked at because I thought the same but I did a search and there are quite a few horses that carry Dun and nd1 that do show the DFP 1&2 brindling.

But, once again, maybe it is the added chinchilla that is throwing a wrench into things.

  • I always recommend that you not freak out til the horses get their adult body. Your DFP is going to be pretty subtle on this base, so it may not show at all til he has a bigger canvas to show it off with.

  • I looked through my DFP horses with chin and Nd1 out of three pages only a handful had any expression and those ones were the foals that were only het chinchilla. Otherwise the DFP didn’t show hardly at all, even when hom.

The horses who just have dun seem to express it better especially when hom dun.

  • @Cheers
Thanks Cheers. He definitely grew up to be a handsome boy but with none of the DFP expression I was hoping for.

    @BlaxkDiamond
Thank you for the examples. The are very helpful and they are all so gorgeous.
I guess it is the Dun/nd1 with Chinchilla combo preventing the expression.
There are plenty of non Chinchilla horses with D/nd1 that express DFP just fine.

In the end, he is being merged with another horse and I won't be able to see much of him anyway. And his babies are going to be gorgeous no matter what.

Thanks for the learning experience everyone! :)

  • I will play around with the generator later to see if it is a generator issue or a gene choice issue. It won't be the highest of priorities I am afaid.

  • No worries Ammit, thank you for taking a look when you are able!

I am really curious to find out why the DFP expression doesn't show. If it is due to gene choice I am totally fine with that. It will be good to know what to expect in future breedings. :)

  • @BlackWyld nd1 is the gene hiding the DFP. I do not know why it is doing this in this specific case but that does seem to be the issue. Adding agouti or removing nd1, or turning the horse red-based all seem to allow it to show. It just doesn't work on grullos with nd1 for some reason. I have made a note of it but realistically it may be an exceedingly long time and potentially never will I have a chance to address this highly specific issue.
