Talk to me!
-
I would like to see more conversations here on the forum. So I'm going to periodically toss out some suggestions!
Todays Forest topic: How does your family deal with your horse addiction? Do they just roll their eyes and shake their heads? or do they encourage every little horse crazy thing you do?

Yes to more conversation!
I've been a horsey-person since I was a toddler, so everyone knows I can talk about horses for literally hours. I went to college to learn more about them, for goodness sake! XD My dad loves to talk about it and we go to expos and shows because we're more farm-y than my mum. She legit forgot that I owned a horse until I mentioned it in casual conversation!ID# 25784Thanked by 1whywishesarehorses -
I have no idea how they'd deal with a real horse. With my work schedule I end up playing a little late at night to have some time to myself, so my mom tells me to go to bed when she's about to hit the hay herself. A couple hours later my cat does one of two things. She will ether sit herself between me and the computer so I can't type or she beats on doors until someone else comes out and translates her insistent demand that I quit for the night. :))Thanked by 1whywishesarehorses

My mom was a horse girl, and we were very close through my childhood because of it. My dad isn't part of the horse family, but he's learned a lot in the last few decades and he loves to try to talk shop with me.
I do have my own horse, a gift from when I was little (a mustang mare, given to me by my parents when I was 12. I still have her, now all the way across the country.)
My new partner tries very, very hard to be supportive of my horse addiction, but doesn't understand the love and mostly thinks horses are just TOO BIG. We're working on petting my mare's face through a fence lol. -
I can't ride horses anymore because i have a spinal issue that puts me at very increased risk for a fractured neck if i fall off (like, even if i don't hit my head or anything, if the force transfers up my spine wrong it could fracture a bone and i would be done). So this game is my way to still be in that world.
I did riding from 3rd grade until college, when i found out about this previously undiagnosed issue. I had a fall that gave me a concussion and a chip fracture of a vertebrae, and they found out at that point that the two above the fracture were fused from birth. Those two therefore have extra flexible joints above and below, and the length of the bone makes it unstable also. So that's 3 points of weakness high enough in my neck to make me a quad or dead if they get injured. Not a risk i can take anymore, though it was devastating to give up riding. :'(
I'm a vet tech and get to encounter horses in that field occasionally, and i watch all the horse sports i can get on TV. My partner and parents watch with me because they know enough horse things to enjoy the events, but they're not into the biology and genetics like i am (which is what drew me to this game). -
silverborn, I had a chip fracture in my 5th lumbar vertebrae when I was 17 from a fall off my horse, and had to spend 6 months in a back brace. It was one of those cascading kind of fractures. I landed JUST wrong on my tailbone and the force traveled up my spine and stopped at the biggest vertebrae. 40 years later, I am feeling the arthritis. My injury didn't stop me from riding though, that must have been heartbreaking.

This game is my horse addiction. I stumbled upon it looking for a genetic game and fell in love. My roommate likes to see the pretty pictures, and my hunny supports my habit, but they are both glad I don't have a horse of my own. My boys just listen and nod, much like I do when they talk about video games.45120

I can't afford to be involved with horses in real life nowadays in any way, this game is my outlet for it - I guess my loved ones are relieved I have somewhere to turn to as my wistful horse talk tends to fall on fallow ground - much like Seaswell's sons and their video games I guess!
In theory my husband would support me getting a horse to help me in my work, as I literally walk many kilometres each day to check on our sheep in an extensive farming system. The horse I want probably would be unobtainable though, as it needs to be absolutely bombproof. -
@silverborn - I'm super curious if therapeutic riding would help you? Or did your PT say it is out of the question? I've seen some amazing things done with therapy horses. Even people who are fully competent and mobile benefit from therapy!ID# 24891

It might help, but i think it would make me sad. I could jump before and was doing hunter shows and all that, so going back for therapeutic riding would feel very consolation prize like to me now.
There's nothing physically stopping me from riding, except the risk that if i fall off I'll break my neck and become a quad or die. But that's a bad mental load to go into riding with. So it's that state where my body can, but it has to go right, which is enough pressure to make it go wrong.... -
I'm so sorry you're in that situation. It's hard to pull a girl away from her horse!ID# 24891

Hugs @Silverborn.
I managed to get Hunny to touch a horse for the time last year in Texas while we were visiting family. I've come a long way from having my own gelding in the back yard.
@DreamyMeadows I hope the perfect little 5 year old falls in your lap.45120Thanked by 1DreamyMeadows -
Hi Confluence. Sorry, life has been really hard on me lately and I keep going between wanting to talk to people and not wanting to talk about what I have been going through and feeling that any other topic feels fake and trivial by comparison... As far as horse addiction... My Mom and I are both horseless horse lovers (I used to be in the horseless horse project in 4-H and we fill the void with goats) Games like this are my real horse addiction, though I have been having a hard time keeping up with anything, including this with life really well (Surprisingly my lizard can handle neglect and stay healthy better than my pasture foals can XD) I did mention a bit ago that I would have to get my pasture foals out of pasture to keep them from deleting, and when my parents heard how many horses I had they laughed and said it was probably ok if some of my horses got deleted. I ended up forgetting to pull them out once again. But yeah... Horse addiction is kinda an accepted part of life. I will have to say once I was trying to custom one of my toy horses into a sooty dun skin like one in the game I culled but was gorgeous, and my Mom decided to show me her extensive breyer collection and one was the same color as my lizard and the cat freaked out.All into high quality black based primitive duns and bootstraps.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

I have loved horses since I was very little. My family has always been supportive but we were too poor for me to get a horse and there was nobody we could pay for riding lessons. But I made friends with people who had horses so got a lot of exposure at a young age. I as able to help a breeder out for a summer 4 years ago and she gifted me a little mare in exchange for my work. So I got to train the long 2yr old filly the following summer. I also got married to a farm/ranching man.
So my little mare moved out to the ranch with me that fall. And I got to learn how to be a ranch rider (different than cowgirl) on my mare. I have kept learning the past three years but ranch work hasn’t really been challenging enough for us. Not when they only ride 20-30 times a year working cows. So I decided a month ago to focus on dressage, figured it would cross over enough that working cows a couple times a year wouldn’t hurt anything.
My husband is a bit less supportive of my horse craziness than the rest of my family. He prefers his hondaloosa (four wheeler) I can’t really blame him. Horses have always meant work for him, when you have to ride for 1-6 hours straight it’s not very fun. It didn’t help that the ranch horses are like trying to ride a board. No personality, hard to get going, hard to turn, rough gaits, they do what they have to and nothing more.
But otherwise my whole family is behind me 100% I could decide to do or try anything and they would be behind me. And it’s the same with every other aspect of life. Well as long as I wouldn’t get hurt or hurt anybody else. They might not understand it but they are behind me. -
My family supports me but they don't enjoy it like I do. I am hoping to go to my first clinic next month. Then start showing in endurance racing next year. They don't want to get involved.

My family is pretty supportive- unless I spend a few too many hours on it :-D =))Breeder of brindles and anything else I see :)

With no sort of land right now or money for a real horse, this game is my outlet, lol! My wife tolerates it with a sort of bored amusement and as long as I don't spend too much on fancy genes, she likes that I have a nice calm game that's probably better for the brain than most mmos, especially with how positive this community is! =))ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines!
