Breyer Customizers - I have a (really weird?) question
-
My aunt and my daughter are cleaning out my mom's old house, and I have been gifted with her entire collection of manicure/acrylic nail supplies.
I decided several years ago that I'd rather just pay someone to do mine, since I'd slave over them for 3-4 hours only to have them fall off in 3-5 days. So now I'm assessing the art-project value of these items. All of the polish is several years old so I tossed it, and I was about to toss the acrylic building stuff too, but...
Has anyone ever used acrylic gel/powder to customize their models? What else do you think might I use this stuff for?
Edit to add - how about the 5 billion and one full-coverage plastic nail forms?Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free. -
I don't paint collectables or get real carried away with my nails, but I feel like at least one needs to be tried with dragon scales just to see if you can do it. I want pictures. ;)45120Thanked by 1FollysFantasies

You're not the only one to have suggested this, it was pretty much the first thing each of my household members said. I guess they can stay, for now LOL I'm running out of space for art/craft stuff with "minimal potential" though LOLFolly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.

Let's not admit to supply hoarding. I have 6 bins and a shelf in this little tiny apartment.45120

We have a whole 4 bedroom house, so the accumulation issue compounds - but I try to contain all of my arts and crafts stuff to the office. Hobby room? Play room? I don't know what to call this space.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.

I like office. I'd kill for a whole room and a sewing machine, but I've been keeping happy with paint by numbers. I can't wait for the ones I just ordered to arrive.45120Thanked by 1FollysFantasies

I've been on a 'clear it out' kick for the past few weeks. I keep finding stuff that I absolutely don't need and boxing it up for Goodwill, but none of the thrift stores in the area are accepting donations right now1

If you're going to donate your breyers I will gladly take them off your hands. :D you have a beautiful collection!Thanked by 1FollysFantasies

@ConfluenceFarms - I love donating/tossing stuff. It feels freeing a lot of the time, and makes more room for things that "spark joy" in the words of Marie Kondo.
@RoseFlute - Thank you! Maybe someday, but they all spark joy so for now they stay! I think I have about 400 of them, including the ones in bins. There are only a few out, most of them destined for the workbench if they aren't there already. I have at least 8 currently in progress, but my executive dysfunction issues mean I don't work on them very often.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free. -
I agree a dragon-scaled horse would be very cool. But other than that I have no clue.
Would you mind telling me how you put them in bins? I have always been afraid that they will scratch each other or break legs and tails. Is there a secret to protecting them I don't know? -
The secret to putting them in bins/boxes is to make a custom-fit box for each horse. The Breyer boxes they are purchased in are far too large when you have numerous horses you want to store.
However, since I primarily customize, the bins are strictly for bodies. I don't really care if they get scratched or warp a bit, because it's a fairly easy fix later, and I know how to fix the ones that have been broken. I've never had one break in my bins, btw.
The two molds that I collect (Huckleberry Bey, Silver) are on display, and would get special boxes if I needed to pack them up.
Perhaps my largest problem is figuring out what to do with the ones I've painted! I don't have a lot of space for dust-catchers LOL and since I paint decorators, there isn't much market to sell them.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free. -
Huh. Good to know you haven’t had one break in a bin. What temperature do they start warping at? I haven't done any customizing so I don't know how to fix broken bits. And my painting skill is mostly limited to canvas.
-
There are tons of Breyer groups on Facebook and people are selling customs quite a lot on there.Love,
Chase ♡ -
@BlaxkDiamond - If there's any weight on them, they can warp at room temperature.
@SpryOfJune - I only paint decorators. There is far less demand for those, everyone seems to want something they can live show. And I'm just not that good. :)
The sales I've made have all been unintentional, and for now that's ok with me.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.
