Choosing Show Horses
  • Hi all, I did attempt a search for similar topics but didn't find much.

I understand that it is very important to have a hefty show string for income. I bought a handful of spayed mares and geldings, and bred some more that have joined my show string, but now I'd like to know what the most educated way of finding the best show horses for sale is.
So when searching, what do yall look for in prospective show ponies? Do you go by points? Wins?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you!!
  • Oooh, I just realized I'm still under the 20000 point mark for creating pointed creates.
I think I'll just start following the herd helper discussions and using those to create a bunch of nice show ponies instead of buying!

  • There you go! That is an excellent way to do it. I didn't think about focusing on pointed Herd Helper horses!

The best way to determine how good a show horse will be is to check it's Performance Test results (PT). The higher the PT the better the horse will train. You also want to look for horses that are several years 'younger' than their PT score because once their age get close to their PT score their training levels off and they don't get huge increases when they train anymore.

Then, of course, there is the price.

  • Awesome, that's a super good note, thank you!
  • As a younger account I would focus on points. Higher PT horses will usually end up earning more points over their lifetime, but if you buy young high PT horses it'll often take several in game years before they even start bringing in any real amount of points and points is where the money is. So I'd get yourself established with higher point horses first and use high PT horses are future earners.
  • If you use HH, make sure to use exceptionally perfect, exceptional show, and exceptionally producing appaloosa ones. They have the highest PT of the available HHs, so they can train and gain points longer.
