What breed is a carousel horse?
  • My Common-law MIL has given me the task of drawing some carousel horses for printing on various things (mugs, bags, shirts, etc) and It has sent me down the proverbial rabbit hole to the point where I know far more about horses and their anatomy than anyone who has no intention of owning horses should.

That being said though, I cannot decide which breed of horse would be a carousel horse. The classic carousel horse with the freaked out expression looks like something between and arabian and a saddlebred to me.

    Thoughts?

  • They are not based on any specific breed.

  • I kinda figured that given the carousel nightmare fuel I've been exposed to. I was already planning on sprinkling artistic license into the designs. Just figured I give everyone a fun thought project.

  • It depends on the carver. Some of the master carvers had very different styles. This website is a good reference - https://antiquecarousels.com/the-master-carvers-carousel-builders/
  • @caramia and that site is now in my favorites.

Of course, I'd love to know who did this one so we can get them some help.

  • So, we have a particularly rare carousel in Little Rock Arkansas that my godmother helped restore and as a result I have a huge love for it. If you search Over The Jumps carousel Little Rock on the Google and then click images, you can see some good pictures of it. Since she was working on it when I was young, I very much think carousel horses look like those and they, to me, look like they are of old Spanish influence—Andalusian/Lusitano-ish. The carousel is actually now fully restored and you can ride it at our Zoo. I got to ride it with my niece when I was last home before COVID hit. It is a Herschel-Spillman carousel so it’s creator is on that website @Caramia linked.
  • I have never seen a carousel like that! That's super cool! Those horses will most definitely be used for inspiration.

The whole thing started because my SO's grandmother was going to buy an antique carousel horse for a friend and came to MIL and I to try to figure out if it was really wood or not. It didn't look like wood to us so we started doing research and looking at loads of carousel horses. Inspiration struck and now I'm drawing a bunch of carousel horses.
