Question about AFPT from boosted lines
  • I have a few questions! I need some assistance restructuring my mare AFPT culling system. I used to breed C/Yellow foundation stock and used the criteria listed below. I now currently breed from primarily A/Blue foundations with one line being from B/Red foundations. I really want to get stricter with my culling because I continuously run out of pasture space. AFPT has always been difficult for me to utilize for culling because of my stock being boosted and me not knowing what to make my cutoff.

Ideally I would like two separate criteria for AFPT based on the foundation breeding level. So the below list is for C/Yellow (perfect foundations) and I need to edit it to fit B/Red (Ex Pro/Perf foundations) and again to fit A/Blue (boosted foundations).

This is what I was using when I was breeding from C/Yellow foundations so how should I tweak this to fit my A/Blue lines and B/Red line? (I copied this list from Ammit several RL years ago from a post she commented on pertaining to PT and AFPT).
    - F 9.9
    - 2G 10.3
    - 3G 10.7
    - 4G 11.1
    - 5G 11.6
    - 6G and up 12 or higher

    So here are my questions:
    1. Using the criteria/format above, what are reasonable AFPT goals to strive for in each generation for my current boosted and ex pro/perf breeding lines?
    2. Do you cull stallions by AFPT? If yes, do you do it after at least 10 foals? 25? A different number?
    3. How often do you check mare AFPT. Do you check and cull after 3 foals? Do you recheck every mare every year? What is the best way to utilize this culling method? My idea was to currently go through all my mares 6+ with 3 or more foals and cull based on the new criteria and then for the younger/future mares, wait until they are 6yo and have 3 foals and cull only as 6yos.

I am working on trying to create my own lists but would love some input from other experienced players! Thanks in advance for any help!

  • I'm only culling by AFPT in my bootstrap herds, so i can answer #2 & 3 from that perspective. For #1, i'm not strict on AFPT so i can only base on what I've read.

    1. I would just slide eveything up one slot for your B/Red line and 2 slots for your A/Blue. So for B's, I'd say 10.3 for foundation, etc. For A's 10.7 for foundation, etc. I don't know if that would be strict enough to help you or not. I suppose I could look at some of my horses and see whete they fall. :))

    2. I cull stallions by AFPT only after 30+ foals, which i usually get the first season they're used. They have to comp test AGA or Superior to my best stud of that line before even getting a chance to breed. After they get a good 25-30+ foals, i look at AFPT. They have to be close to the best studs of that line to stay.

    3. I check mare AFPT at 6+ years old. Once they have 3 foals, i put it in their name for simplicity sake when looking at pedigrees. I have a hard minimum AFPT and cull any mares below that. Then i have a buffer range, which is between my hard min and my "preferred min" These buffer mares are usually ones i'm using to bring in new colors or genes. They have to be close to or better than their dam's AFPT AND have the color or gene i'm trying to bring in. If they miss out on color, they are culled by the preferred min. I hope that makes some sense. I check AFPT every season and update names as needed.
