Lifetime Payout In Auctions... Can Someone Explain?
  • Hey Y'all

I searched the forum high and low for a deeper explanation. Just curious to know how it works. How is Lifetime Payout calculated? At what age do we get the lifetime payout in auction? Is it worth it to auction them off?

    Thank you :)
  • Life time payout kicks in when a horse turns 10. I find it wonderful when I cull leveled off horses for not making enough money to keep using the stall.

  • Lifetime payout is the sum of all the horse's current daily payout from the day you are viewing it until the last day of its 17th month (the minimum age horses are guaranteed to live).

Lifetime payout does not account for adding to the daily payout via showing and it does not account for any additional month over the age of 17 that the horse may live.

As Seaswell says, you may auction horses age ten and over and their starting bid will be their lifetime payout. It's a good way to cash in on a horse that isn't adding to its daily payout because it leveled off at the bottom of its class (or at a very low class level with minimal earnings and points).

If a 12 year old horse has leveled off placing 1st or 2nd in Grand Prix World classes, they may be adding a couple hundred points a month to their accumulated points, increasing their daily payout routinely (plus their hbs winnings). For these horses, the lifetime payout would understate the potential earnings of the horse. But if you needs the hbs now for whatever reason, it may make sense to auction such a horse. You'll get immediate (well, with 48 hours) hbs at the cost of future hbs in a couple months.

The same horse that leveled off coming in 4th in 2Local may actually cost you money (entry fees exceeding show winnings with no points being added). So it would benefit you to auction the horse now and get the hbs today rather than wait for them to trickle in over several months. Plus, it would free up a stall for a better-earning or younger horse.

  • The lifetime payout is what the horse would make all the way up until they're 18 if they never showed another show. Basically with the points they have at this moment if that helps. It doesn't factor in future points earned or if they live longer than rollover when they turn 18.
It's really useful to cull show ponies and even extra mares after they turn 10 that don't have many points or leveled off in a bad place to where I don't think they're worth hanging on to. All but 100 head of my horses (6500ish) are in my barns so pretty much everyone shows and they all have to earn their keep. If they level off and their placings/points/genes/babies don't impress me much, I'll send them to auction for the payout.
