Closed Genes (aka genes that require licenses) are generally only available through the Roving Gene Sale (RGS) which is generally a series of 3 genes offered for 15 days then rotated out to a different 3 (those 3 aren't always closed genes either), some also come up more often than others (Phantoms are usually specific to their "season" as for when they pop up). Exceptions to the three are generally if Ammits released new genes or if Ammits doing a special event, a lot of the time during Secret Santas (so Dec and possibly summer around HAJs anniversary) she'll make the RGS rotate every day to give people a chance to potentially gift their SS with their dream gene. Occasionally Ammit puts some up in the Gene Modification Lab (GMT Lab) but Splash M is the only one that consistently stays available in the GMT lab to purchase without using RL money (if it's available in the lab you can use GMT tokens to purchase the license); on that note some players will offer an exchange of HBs for a closed license gene if another player is willing to pay RL money to put it on the other players horse, that rate is usually 100k hbs per $1 RL money spent.

If you want to check out which genes require licenses and which licenses you own go to your Member Home page and the Stable Overview, scroll down and you'll currently see a number/44 Owned Closed Gene Licenses. The number in front of the 44 is how many of them you own with 44 being how many genes currently require licenses in game. Click on that link and it will expand and show you all the genes. Ones in highlighted green are the ones you own, grayed out ones are the ones you don't own yet.

Lace is a gene that will generally only be available during February, and will only be available in the RGS (for real money).
