Diabetic feline
-
So my 9 year old cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. Today was the first day putting both cats on a special diet. I put Saphira on the same diet as Tinkerbell because I don't want two diabetic cats. Tinkerbell had been hiding so much I didn't realize she dropped 5lbs in about 2 weeks. I feel absolutely horrible. I've always let them graze because Tinkerbell was a stray and tended to freak out when food wasn't readily available. But she gets insulin 2x a day now as well as 2 meals. I'm so scared I'm going to mess this up. Thankfully I'm in such a better mindset now that my ppd is properly being treated.

Hope your able to get thing under control for your feline friends.

I just saw this @Amgr1992. :( I'm sorry! How's it going? If you want any tips please let me know. Keeping a journal with medical record copies handy was helpful with my grandmother's cat.

Any tips would be welcome @Looper! It's going as good as it can. She's constantly tearing food out of the garbage. Getting on the table if anyone turns their backs, she'll find a loaf of bread and get to it and tear it apart. She's not letting us help her very well

:( That's typical for feral/stray. A vet I worked with had one that wouldn't even let her do the insulin shots or the bloodwork. They could only manage the course of the disease with food and water and minimizing stress. Not ideal but it was all she could do.
Do you use wet food? You can add some water to it to slow her down and help her feel fuller. Not too much or she might throw it back up. A fiber might help but I would check with your vet for what kind. Some of them have added sugar. She should eat at least half her portion before getting her insulin but you can ask your vet about taking a 1/4 of her portion and putting it in a puzzle feeder or a smackable treat toy. Always confirm with the vet as I don't know what her total med history is.
Have you thought about tracking her sugars at home in between vet visits so vet can decide if any of her behavior is due to sharp glucose swings that don't show up at the vet's? They can recommend a meter like humans use but calibrated for animals. If she's so food motivated then it might be possible to clicker train her to tolerate an ear prick. -
Yes we use soft food! Half is soft the other half is hard. I will talk to them about all of these suggestions! Thank you :)

Just popping in to let you know that I’ve been on this exact journey with my cat. He was diagnosed diabetic at 4 years old. This year he turned 20. Diabetes in cats can seem very scary and nerve wracking but I promise they can go on to live very normal, happy lives. It def takes some getting used to and don’t be afraid to make mistakes, we all do haha! I wish you all the best on your journey ^^Breeder of Chocolate Chinchilla, Nexus Chinchilla, Satin Chinchilla and DP Mushroom Drafts and Cobs

Growing up I had a diabetic cat. He lived to be 21 (was diagnosed at 10). I also have a diabetic dog currently (diagnosed at 9, currently 15), so if you have any questions or need support feel free to message me. Which type of insulin? analog (long lasting) or the old kind (novolin being the most common)? I use novolin because of expense, and I can keep a really good schedule (work where I live, etc).

I know Lord knows I have a lot of stuff going on now.
But I wanted to let you know that if you have any questions you can feel free to personal message me. I'm a registered veterinary technician and I can help with words of encouragement and answering questions
