Anyone else get overwhelmed?
-
I have 425 studs. I hate to say it but I am close to just snipping them all and starting over. I have so many that I havent even opened pictures on. Anyone want to help open pictures?

Oh my. If you want a simple answer I’d say geld everyone who you haven’t bred. But that’s the easy answer. I’m sure you have several gems hiding.
I’m opening a few pages.
Edit... maybe start culling by generation? Inconsistency? -
That is the reason I never start breeding untill I have sorted through and tested and named -all- foals from the previous season :P And I usually only keep one son from each stallion, unless there are very good reasons to keep one more (like they fit different lines).
Time to get the snippers, I would say :!! (we really need a snip snip emoji, but this will have to do!)ID 108 -
Woo, that's a few boys to sort. It might be worth it to search for traits that are a must have, and give those boys some kind of marker (be it a tattoo or a name). Then you can opt out of that marker in the search, and you'll know everyone left is missing something you want. Whether you geld everyone left or continue to look through them for something you might have missed is up to you, but I think Maribo's right.
It's time to get the snippers.ID# 25784 -
Oh man, stallion hoarding is something I am totally guilty of as well. I don't even want to think or guess how many studs I have that are not being used. :-\" If you need the room then I agree with what others have said, break out those snippers and figure out who you can cut from your lines and/or just snip those you haven't looked at or used. Then start being tough with your breeding and how many studs you keep. And remember, do as I say, not as I do. :))ID: 40723

I definitely have a stallion hoarding issue too :)) I'd maybe put some up for sale first, and if they don't sell in a few days go through and snip!Starred Stables

Nothing gets to keep its pixel testicles unless I’m going to breed it. It doesn’t stay intact unless I have a place for it in a specific pasture. Snip ‘em all! Nothing needs testicles! (This is the battle cry of the small animal vet)Thanked by 1Looper

I need to follow Cheers's cry, but sadly I hoard. I need to get the snippers out and go to town.

I'm determined to make only 2 fancy foundation studs a year after doing to couple of big culls. I'm only going to make/keep holiday mares and my favorite RS. I'm slowly going through the Generation studs to make each fit in one barn. The theme of this season is to pull inconsistencies totally out and make sure everyone has DP, S+, SNF and KP. I need to limit the GMTing I do to just the very special horses.
Mares are so hard! I'm hoping enough of my pastures are 19 this season to try and get them to fit better :-?? -
I'm horrible for this. I have a few "must-have" rules...
Consistent
Evenly bred (except for my bootstrap herd)
Superior to Sire
At least 3 genes I breed for
Meets PT marker per generation
Meets/better than benchmark stud per generation
Then after that I get really picky about height and build preference (I'd rather keep a 16+hh warmblood than a 15hh riding horse, etc). I also find if I'm not excited about them by the time they're 5 or so, I dont need them. I also give them 3 seasons to prove themselves. If most offspring are snipped, or if their AFPT is lower than their own PT, they will not work here. I find hanging onto these studs sets me back further, honestly. And I'm also unsure why that happens. It seems some studs work very very well. And his identical twin brother may be a complete flop, on the other hand. LOL. I also only keep Foundation thru G4s currently. G5+ are considered Bootstrap herd, and keeping a new stud is pretty rare.
Thanks to yall I went from 48 studs down to 25 by this thread. LOL!!
