So I've never actually done this before. Is there a thread that acts as a guide for newbies? What tips or tricks should I know about?

The closest thing I've done is breed star studs to foundation mares for high PT show foals but that was it, I snipped them and didn't really start a line with them.

If it helps I picked up some dreamy starters: It's not very many but they have almost exactly what I want.

The way I'm working my bootstrap herd is looks and high paper/PT. I have my dreamy foundie stud and various gen and bone mares that have what I want. I chuck them in the pasture, and sort through the foals, run all testing except BA and comparision, but comp test the colts. The foals are only kept if they have 10+PT and have the right genes.

Everybody bootstraps a little differently so there is no wrong way of doing it. :)

It’s really important you know there is no wrong or right way to Bootstrap. Everyone does it their own way. Figure out what you want—show foals? Highest PT in the game? A band of Gold mares? Leaderboard ponies? A specific color combo? Breed for it, enjoy it, have fun with it!

Thank you guys for your replies so far! That thread looks like it will be super helpful. So far my plan is: grow my show herd and have them look good while doing it. XD Looks like I’m on the right track, although I’ll probably have to pick up a few more gold mares. I don’t plan on using my single pasture as I’ll need it for my only other line.

I see you picked up a few of my fillies - if you'd like more gold mares and/or a star stud I can set you up with some as a 'welcome to bootstrapping' gift. If interested, let me you know what you like so I can go look around here.

I am constantly culling in my bootstrap herd so always have mares available for rehoming.

Also join the Bootstrap chat if you haven't already. Lots of us have studs up for breeding for cheap and people are always putting stock up for sale and happy to answer questions.

You really can't go wrong with bootstrapping (or any type of breeding in general) it can be whatever you want.
And there is no such thing as a stupid question. We have all started out at some point and know what you are going through. Ask questions and you will have people tripping over themselves to help answer them. This place is awesome for that. :x

@BlackWyld it was actually that giant post that inspired me to fill my new 1000 stall barn with a bootstrap herd! I'll send you a PM of what I'm looking for but I'll post it here too.

So my goal is to breed heavy/medium mares to a riding horse stud over and over until the whole herd is riding horse sized while keeping high PTs and papers. The lightest boned fillies of each foal crop will be kept intact and sent back to their sire.

Genes for the Mares:
-Draft/cob (for the initial 'foundation')
-Hom Satin (required)
-Het LP (hom is ok too)
-Het or hom KP/KP2 (required)
-Het or hom DP
-Het or hom S+
-Het or hom SB2/White 3/White 8
-Het or hom Snowflake
-Het or hom GP
-Preference to black or bay based

I don't think I'll be picking up another stud unless he were absolutely perfect. The one I have now is close to what I want, minus 4 GMT I'll be spending on him.

If he's out there, he will be:
-Tall and light riding horse
-Homozygous for Satin, S+, DP, Snowflake(w/LP but no PATN1), KP or KP2, GP, Kit M or SB2 on a Silver Bay/Brown base

ETA: I don't own any licenses and prefer to stick to non fantasy genes. :)

I will find a few to show you as soon as I get the chance. I have lots of satin and KP so there should be some.
