Pasture Mare culling
-
How often should you cull out pasture mares? I've done it every season after foaling but maybe that's to hard of culling, I'm not quiet sure. What do you guys think? What have you done?
I do have goals for reaching high performance scores with my pasture as well as quality with each pasture as wellAll foals not meeting my standards automatically gelded / spayed, if you see anything you want pm me before I geld/spayed.

I have quite a few pastures. I have a few foundation pastures and then a pasture for each generation up to gen 6 and then a bootstrap pasture.
I tend to swap out my generation pastures every month and i pull out however many I have that are of age to go in the pasture. I've mostly been pulling those who are either 15yrs and older, low paper/pt or who have genes i try to avoid. My bootstrap i sort by paper and pt and simply cull the lowest and replace with what has come of age. This means I basically never have an lined mares in my barns over the age of 3. It helps with space but does mean i dont get fantastic points with them.
my foundation pastures i have recently overhauled. I basically emptied them all and set up as folllows
red papered with snf/dp
red papered pretties
yellow papered with snf/dp
yellow papered pretties
The pretty pastures are for my fantasy stallions so have genes like nd1 and pearl and the snf/dp pastures are for my snf/dp/kp foundations. I don't have many separate lines which probably helps. My foundation pastures I'll keep topping up as and when I find the horses and my lined pastures i update every season. It probably doesn't help though that I did fill my pastures with mostly random horses a few seasons ago to make up the number and have been slowly trying to change these to relevant mares.ID - 47350 (Most Licences) Breeding heavy. Personally I stuff as many mares as I can into my pastures (not too hard on this server. A bit more harder on HJ1) and leave them until they age out or every few months I think to go through and spay the 20+ year olds and kick them out.
Every few months I also go and kick everyone out and refill the pastures to mix things up but I just sort by generation on HJ2 and generation plus KP or fantasy on Hj1.
HJ1 I’m a bit more strict with my mares and have started to cull based on genetics in the lower levels just like I do my studs (they’re culled by genetics at all levels though) to have more of a Grullo colour guarantee.Breeding even generation Grullos with Ice -
Gottcha, im trying to bred for higher pt which has caused be me to cull mares every breeding season. I'm wondering if I've been to strict on them or notAll foals not meeting my standards automatically gelded / spayed, if you see anything you want pm me before I geld/spayed.

Are you looking at bootstrap pastures, even bred pastures, or just in general?
For my bootstrap pastures, my keeper fillies must test superior to their dam, be consistent, have a PT as good as or greater than their dam, and meet my color/gene requirements. Surprisingly, I actually am able to keep the majority of the fillies each season.
For my even bred pastures, my keeper fillies must test superior to their dam, be consistent, and meet my color/gene requirements. I will pick higher PT fillies over lower PT fillies, but only after the other requirements are met.
I regularly go through and compare my upcoming fillies to the mares I already have in pasture. If there is a filly who would better fit my goals for that pasture, I replace the mare with the filly. If all of my regular requirements are met, then I will start to go by height/weight/WF. I detest high WF since I play with a lot of white spotting genes.Thanked by 1Looper -
All mine are bootstrap expect for some upcoming foundation pastures next month and that sounds like a very good system you have going onAll foals not meeting my standards automatically gelded / spayed, if you see anything you want pm me before I geld/spayed.

I've been focused on their first six foals. They have to have at least 3 with improved papers and PT scores to stay in.
Soon I will be cycling out a lot more for more specific color/gene combos though.
