Vanish Question

  • It's varnish, so if you see Vrn your appy or horse has the varnish gene and will fade or "white out" over time.

Snowflake is the appy gene that produces those tiny white specks all over Appaloosas. It too will cause your horse to white out over time, but it makes them look like a snow globe during the process.
  • +1 to what Cheval said. Varnish can also be het (one copy) or hom (two copies) which will change how much they white out over time. As far as I'm aware hom will white-out completely but het does not.

Here are some examples of snowflake starting in a young horse and ranging to an older whiteout. It's a fun gene but eventually you'll be left with a mostly white horse. lol

Two year old - fresh snowflake, lots of easily distinguished 'spots'.

Six year old - many more spots that are starting to blend together.

Eight year old - Almost to the point where they are whited out.
