Tips from watercolor breeders?
-
So I have been indecisive. I was planning on starting a line of tiny livers on Mesa and then I thought about how fun watercolor would be! However, I've never had the license and I was hoping for some tips from more experienced watercolor breeders.
I really like the dappley two tone look, but I'm not sure my brand new account can save up for S+ in the next two months.
Also, does DP have an effect on watercolor?
Any other tips or favorite combos?
Here is a link to my foundation boy on Mesa (If I added watercolor I would GMT his E back on). Any other tips for mods that would look good with watercolor?

Thank you all!

Here's my first Watercolor boy :) If you search his babies, anyone with Liver really pops!

Nacre is new to me but Nacre and Watercolor are looking fun :) S+ and DP apparently make it pop more.

I'm hoping Ice 16 and Phantom Lace get offered again soon so I can finish him. -

I believe that watercolor affects darker pigment more, if you breed a lot of dark foals you'll get a lot of bright colors. I find that the Uber saturated colors can be overpowering (rerolling takes the edge off), and the subtle colors on paler coats are also really nice.
If you can't afford Sooty+ you could breed to outside studs until you get a good 2g stud to breed to a lot of watercolor mares. Oooor you could breed for colors like silver black that will dapple easily. -
I like combining watercolor with patterns that create different shades - s+, sty, dun, onyx, etc. to create a larger variety of colors on each horse. Solid horses will generally be a solid color. Cream creates more pastel-ly colors, DP darkens and makes them more vivid.
My pride and joy over on the other server is Leu, a Good China based watercolor. He's very pastel due to the double cream, but still has some color due to the onyx and his het DP.
Onx Leucoryx

And some grandfoals with no dilution or only onyx. EightName is at least het DP and may be hom DP. There's less color and shade variation on the two with no onyx or dilution patterns, despite the Appy.

You can still definitely get the two tone look with bay (and some dapples here and there by throwing in DP sometimes!) even if it won’t be as strong as S+. That being said, I definitely second the recommendation to breed to some outside studs to throw that S+ in there anyways.
My longstanding personal favorite with watercolor is satin (and add pearl for extra shine). There’s a certain elegance to it that really blows me away.

Personally I like bright and contrasting colors so I think my guy is great. If I decide I want a different aesthetic I think it would be easy enough to breed him with various mares and see what happens.

Thank you for the help everyone! If I can get watercolor on him I think I'll and am E and a Cream to make him a silver buckskin base. Hopefully that would mute the color a bit and also give him a ton of dapples!ID 43830

Bit late to the discussion but I love watercolor. I recently merged 2 of my accounts to play around with it. Take a look at some littl experimental babies :-
