Missing foals?
  • Can anyone help me figure this out? I have 30 mares in a pasture and they have all been bred yet I can only find 26 foals. The stud had a lot of white factor but nothing I would consider highly lethal and he was put to mares who didn't have as much white factor. I don't think I got any notifications of dead foals (if that is even a thing).

    Stud I used-

I have not gone through and sorted out whose foals are whose so I don't know yet which mares are missing their foals.

Any ideas? If it is lethal white factor coming into play here, I can replace the stud and consider it a lesson learnt to pay more attention to white factor. It just seemed odd that I would already have issues with white factor so wanted to make sure I am not missing something else.

    Thanks a bunch!

  • Just went through some of the mares- this is one mare that is showing as bred but is missing a foal

ETA: another mare- this one I didn't realize she had W2 so that's probably why. I just looked up the white factor chart and see that W2 does NOT play well with W3. Stud has W3 so that's probably what happened with that cross- interesting this mare is W2/W3 though.. that was definitely luck of the draw.

I am guessing after reading through the white lethality post and what wolfgang pride posted, the w3/w3 on top of high white factor is what did these 4 babies in.

  • Some mares just might not produce a foal as in the baby died I get it sometimes where I have maybe 30 or so mares and only get maybe 25 foals or something. Don't breed frame to frame. Also, some genes are lethal with others. Use this for reference

  • As for her, she has w3 and so does the sire. W3 and W3 is lethal

  • @Wolfgang Pride- interesting! Thanks for the tip= I had read it as moderate risk and have several W3/W3 babies but didn't realize it got more dangerous as white factor went up. Something I will need to keep in mind for that pasture. Luckily I am replacing most of these girls so I'll be able to sort through and get less white factor/spotting genes rotated in there

  • I mean w3 with w3 is moderate but with many mares have it and the only stallion being used having it the risk increases
