Understanding Satin
-
Can someone help me fill in the blanks for the satin gene?
I understand it is a recessive gene but confused on the upper and lower case letters
-/- will produce -/- (no satin)
Sa/- will produce a hidden gene (no satin) -- ?
Sa/Sa will produce a hidden gene (no satin) --?
sa/- will produce a hidden gene (no satin) -- ?
sa /sa will produce Satin shown on horse
Sa/sa will produce a hidden gene (no satin) -- ?
TIA

So if a horse is Sa/sa , Sa/Sa , or sa/sa they will all show satin and be in the breeding club?
-
Not really.
Sa/Sa is the same as -/- and will produce NO satin whatsoever.
Sa/sa, -/sa, sa/-, and sa/Sa are all het satin. I'm not 100% sure if it will show in the breeder club, but it will show the satin effect lightly.
sa/sa is what you really want for a satin line. It shows prominently on the horse's coat, and it's in the club.Home of Big N' Bruised and Shine High Bootstraps

Satin only shoes when homozygous. There is no partial effect. :)Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

As Ammit said, satin is homozygous recessive. You must have two small sa for the satin to show (sa/sa). Homozygous recessive is also the only combination that will allow registration in the Breeders club. Sa/sa is heterozygous, and in theory will pass down 50% of the time. Breeding two Sa/sa horses will give you a 25% chance at sa/sa, or homozygous recessive and visible on the coat, a 50% chance at Sa/sa, or heterozygous and not visible on the coat but still a carrier, and a 25% chance at Sa/Sa, or it won’t even be noted in the genetic line and the horse doesn’t carry satin at all.
Satin is pretty expensive at the foundation level to add on, so unless you have a young foundation and a decent daily show bonus, or extra real life $ to add it when it pops up in the RGS, your best bet is to buy into an existing line. -
When you see - it always means wild/normal type. Basically it means no mutations found at that location. We are slowly moving over to that nomenclature.Need to contact me? Read this first.
