What is Snowflake?
-
I don't understand the snowflake genes. If it is a hidden gene how do you know if a horse has it? I keep seeing horses that say they have snowflake but I can't see it. I didn't find any info in the genetics guide either.IAM WolfDen #50695

Snowflake is a hidden gene, and it has to be hom to show for example:
SHS Chillis Sorkie BasBlu
This stallion is hom snowflake. You can see the flakes on his coat, but not a specific gene in the code. The main identifier I use is if the horse is able to be entered in the breeder club Snowflake App.
SH Kalika
This mare, (owned by @DarkMelody) het snowflake. Her father is hom, therefore he passed at least one copy down to her, but her mother was not, so she didn't get a copy from mom. So she is only het snowflake, which doesn't show.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk. :DHome of Big N' Bruised and Shine High Bootstraps

Snowflake also requires something else, something to do with the Appaloosa genes, I think? (A good example of why I enjoy other peoples Apps, and don't breed them myself! I cannot remember diddly squat when it comes to all the darned genes!)
-
@ConfluenceFarms, yes. Snowflake also must have at least one copy of appy (Lp) to show. Initially, to have a visible snowflake, the horse must be homozygous snowflake and at least heterozygous Appaloosa.Love,

The fun thing about snowflake is that any horse you create just might have 1 copy of snowflake, even if it isn't appaloosa. Some players have bred a solid mare to a heterozygyous snowflake appaloosa and had a visibly snowflake foal appear. That's always a wonderful surprise.De gustibus non disputandum. Snowflake is a modified form of Appaloosa Varnish. Most appies in game you will notice will slowly white out in a roan sort of pattern—little white hairs develop in their coat until the only color left is on their appy spots. Sometimes spots will develop where ther used to be normal base color, extending their “blanket”.
Snowflake “varnishes” in bigger blotches like big wet snowflakes landing on the coat. This guy below is a 10 year old hom Snowflake and you can see he’s got some big white blotches and will be mostly white soon.

This is his baby granddaughter and you can see she doesn’t look very appy at all, but has those tiny little white spots all over her coat. That’s her baby Snowflake showing. She can’t be entered into the Snowflake club because she’s Onyx, but I know she’s a Snowflake girl because of her look now.

Thank you all for explaining that. I've bookmarked the info now :) I think I will hold off on pursuing snowflakes for now, my barns are stuffed!IAM WolfDen #50695
