Genetics of Chocolate gene question
  • I used my chocolate straw with a hom sooty exceptionally perfect liver chestnut mare (because I think she has at least het DP) and got a Black foal.

Any explanation would be welcome, I think I didn't fully understand the chocolate gene.

  • Chocolate requires hom to show, I think. so adding an allele of chocolate should make the foal chocolate. At least, that's what I'm trying to do with mine.

  • What SandyHoof said. Chocolate is homozygous recessive, and you would need two copies to show. If the genes read bb, you get chocolate, Bb would be black with the chance to produce chocolate, and BB would be black and wouldn't pass on chocolate.

The chocolate genes works by changing black into chocolate, so a chestnut would not show the effects, no matter how dark they were. Black and bay based would show the color shift.

I equate in my mind to black lab vs. chocolate lab. Hope that helps :)
  • Oh, that makes sense now! Thank you both, I didn't understand the hom recessive part :)
