What makes a liver?
-
So, I have two bay foals. I breed for livers, and the foals have snf, which I also breed for. I'm looking to remove the splash on both but that's a different story. I'm also new to GMT work, so I was wondering what GMTs I have to do, if any, to get them to be livers.
Here are the fillies if it helps:

You'll have to take the Extension (E) gene off first. Red Hot will have to have a sooty added, as well. If either has Dense Pheomelanin (DP) they will immediately show as liver, as long as they have both sooty genes at the time. If not it will have to be added in the GMT lab. Edit I apologize I didn't realize they were lined fillies.Thanked by 1SandyHoof

So, the basis of a liver requires no E genes (so the horse will show as ee), and then must have at least three of the four possible markers for shading: sooty/sooty+, and Dense Pheomelanin (sp?). So you can either have two copies of sooty/sooty+, and one copy of DP, or two copies of DP and one copy of sooty/sooty+.
For Lottery, you would have to remove her E gene (swap for an e red gene) to turn the bay into a chestnut base. Since she already has two sooty genes, she would need a minimum of one copy of DP to make her liver (two copies will make a horse so dark liver that it looks black...hence, black liver is all four darkening genes together).
For Red Hot, you would also need to remove her E gene, and since she has one copy of sooty, she will either need two copies of DP, or one DP and one more sooty, to give her the minimum requirement for a liver :)Thanked by 1SandyHoof -
For SHS Lottery, you would only need to change the E to an e (1GMT) so she becomes liver red. Her dam is homozygous DP so she carries one copy of DP for sure.
SHS Red Hot would require her E to be changed to an e as well (1 GMT). Red Hot would need another copy of sooty as well (1 GMT and the cheapest way to make her liver.) I can't tell if her dam is homozygous or heterozygous for DP so you would have to see what happens. If Red Hot inherited a copy of DP, she will become a liver when you change the E to e and add the sooty. If not, you will need to add DP in the lab which is 10 GMTs I believe.
Hope this helps!Home of the:

It is the "E" that keeps them from being chestnut so to start you should change that to "e".
Basically, for them to be liver they need at least three darkening genes. The darkening genes that cause liver are Sty(orS+) and DP.
So to show as liver they need to be at least hom sty and het DP or hom DP and het sty.
The first girl is hom sty so you just need to make sure she is carying her sire or dam's dp.
The second girl is only het sty so I would start by adding her sire's sty and seeing if she has either of her parents copy of DP.

I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me.Thanked by 1SandyHoof -
The first already has het DP, so all she needs is to swith the E to an e.
The second girl aldo sppears to be het DP already, so should obly need the E swithed to e and add a Sty.
@TheBlueMoors gmting lined horses is always only 1 GMT.#28036 -
D'OH! Thank you for the correction @Haltanny... I knew that and somehow it still slipped my mind. Upon closer look, I concur with you that she is at least het DP. I really should not post before I have had some sort of afternoon caffeine. 8-}
I stand corrected- it would be 1 GMT to add DP to a lined horse (provided sire and/or dam carry it already).
