Snowflake vs rec.-varnish?
  • I know I have asked a few people about this before, sorry for the repetition.

I love appaloosa but hate seeing their colours fade. I've been trying to breed for no- or slow-varnish, but it is tough. So I was thrilled to see the Evergreen Boughs hom rec. varnish today!

Am I correct in understanding that it's impossible to get a snowflake appaloosa that is non-varnish? If I GMT snowflake on my EB stud, will this negate his non-varnish genes?
  • Snowflake is carried on the same gene that controls varnish. Effectively, snowflake is a type of varnish that causes big flakey spots of varnish on a faster scale than "regular" varnish. So yes, adding in snowflake will overwrite the hom. rec. varnish nature of evergreens.

  • Actually, my prior comment may not be entirely correct.

Snowflake V(s) needs two copies to show. Recessive varnish V needs two copies for no varnishing to occur. V(r), which is varnish, is dominant to both of them. I'm not actually certain what is the result of a horse that is V(s)V. I *think* there would be some form of varnishing/turning white action, but not snowflake varnish, but I genuinely don't know.

  • I'm not sure how it will be in the game but in real horses snowflake is a type of varnish, there really hasn't been any discovery as to what causes the varnish to present differently. But that would mean you are correct that if you add SNF you will be adding varnish back in. The fun thing about varnish is it will never affect the appy spots only the solid parts of the horse which is how a minimally marked foal can mature louder colored as the varnish creates more spots. I love my mini apps, never know what they will look like the next year lol <3
